Has anyone ever heard this story about GM pulling 9 cars in 1981 and making them convertibles for executives? Here it is on Ebay:

Thumbs%20Up   Very nice!
I never heard the story of the 81's getting pulled off the line and
converted. But, every now 'n then I'll catch a glimps of a later C3
         that was converted.
         Way Cool!   Cool

That's a nice car. If the car has proper documentation to back up the story it could bring a very good price. Gold is not normally a color I like but this looks pretty good.

It is a very ice looking Vert. If I were to sell the Blacray I would snatch this car up. I like the odd color as well as the fact it is a 4 spd & a Vert. Being a later model means it has some nice creture comforts providing a good ride while cruisin!!!

There is just something wrong with this picture, I have done a search and cant find anything to back this up. It's a nice car but parts will interchange with the right person doing the work, that rear deck lid is from a convertible, you can order the top rear section by it's self and make just about anything a vert.
I find the story hard to swallowdohMaybe Joel has some info on this?

Ok I have to back off the statement, a friend of mine told me he read something about the cars being done, didnt know how many or where it was done. I stand corrected.Confused

well.. just after a little looking, there was a company ACI that created 37 convertibles, but, they were Duntov Turbo's... they had what looks like a daytona style fender flares, to allow wider tires and such.... total of 86 were made with 37 of those drop tops... though there was a 3 Phase stages available(Phase 1, Phase 2..so on)... so, not sure as the article does not go into detail as to what the phases included.  Article is from Corvette Fever,  here is a link to it.

I remember seeing this here last time it was on e-bay.  I think it was agreed at that time that the story was not exactly right, but that there were a small number of conversions done, but none by GM directly.  The Duntov convertibles were a different breed - not like this.

I too would love to have this car.  I always loved that 80-82 body style.

IIts a nice car, but i am not a ragtop man. Not to offend anyone with the straight window c3, but one of the reasons i chose the 81 is for the body style.

There is a local 81 Convertible looks just like it in silver.  The story on it is a local restoration shop bought a wrecked 75 vert and an 81 and made the one from two so can be done.  Whatever the story behind this gold one, it sure looks good in pictures.  A lot of cars just look awful when made into convertibles and some cars look good in convertibles with the top down, but look horrible as coupes.  Not so the C3.  Somehow it looks good top up or down, coupe or convertible and bubble back or flat window.

There is about 6 or more members up in the Dallas area that are close to it, maybe you can get on of them to take a look at it. Joel lives up there also, I'm about 150 miles from it. fp_vetter722008-07-19 13:25:40

I'll start with the open request.... here....and I have contacted the buyer for additional info and his blessing to send someone to review the car....

Like Marshall I believe I remember this car when it was on Ebay some time ago. It had the same write up as now. We had the same discussion as we are having now about the validity. I believe we determined that it was done at a conversion shop.

I am pretty sure the conversion is using an earlier model tub since I can see the Astro Ventilation grills behind the drop top hatch.

For me it would be nice to know the history but it would not be the defining factor of the purchase.

Sad part is I will sell the Blacray if I buy this car... It has been in my garage longer than anything I have ever bought to drive.... Hmmmmnnnn... but then again it is just a car ..... Right????? Tuxblacray2008-07-20 06:06:54

Thanks Micki,

I sent Jason a PM asking if I can get an address for you to review the car. I told him that I would be providing you with his cell phone number so that you could call ahead to him. I just did this so he hasn't responded yet. I would think this would be okay though since he has the number posted on EBAY.

He says...... "Please call with any questions - Jason 214-616-8207, cental time but I stay up late- call anytime." I will check back on this later. I have family here today and Lora and I are leaving Monday on vacation. I will catch up with you later on .

I too love the way the '80-'82s look as a convertible. I've always like that body style and the convertible is just the icing on the cake.

That would be cool if you got it Tux. Good luck!

Great...Tuxdude, you're trusting this deal on two GURLS???

First off, this car was NOT built by GM, or sent anywhere BY GM for the conversion, especially as "gifts" for anyone. GM would not have done it for liability reasons. They did, at one time, do a couple of "feasibility" cars, to see how they would look, but the cars were never complete cars.

ACI did do some conversions, tho, including the Duntov Turbo cars, and in all likelihood, this may be one of their conversions, but I don't know...jury is out.
I see enough stuff just from the e-may pics to think it's about $4000 overpriced, IMHO.
I will say this, without actually seeing the car....I would never....NEVER give up da Tuxmobile for this one....just my opinion...

IF the car is still there this weekend, we may run out and have a look-see, if Micki & Mama(well....mostly Micki) don't scare the guy too much...

Saw the car and it's in pretty good shape actually.  Drove it too!  Burned a little rubber around the first turn...Shocked  There were a couple of chips on the paint, but other than that the paint was in good shape.  The color is DARK BRONZE with Camel interior.  The engine sounded strong, but not much poop to it with all the smog junk on it, looked all factory and kept up.  Didn't like the clutch or the breaks.  The car has been sitting for awhile because there were cob webs under it and some on the body.  All the rubber on the front end looked good, exhaust looked like it had run some, but not much (still some shine to it).  Clock, air, radio, gauges, windows, turn signals and break lights worked.  Couple of stains on the carpet, but nothing a good cleaning couldn't get out.  Rag top checked out good.....took it down and put it up with no problem, all hardware in good condition and working well.  Nice lookin' car.Wink  If I had the money, I would consider it.Big%20smile

Copper one went to some Group (most likley custom car seller) sold for $15,100.
I'd pay more for the black one with only half the miles on it.

It ain't gone until it's paid for..... The owner and I are still havin conversations about the car.....

Kinda the Once Bitten / Twice Shy thing......

He had it sold once before for $20K and got it back because the dude didn't come through with all of the dough....

The "new" buyer well let's jest say da owner has a few reservations bout the deal......

Me I ain't never given full $$$$ for anything and I have never much worried bout if ah got sumfin bought or not.... If the deal is meant to be the car well, it will end up here.

If not.....

Well, then ah probally didn't want ta be werkin on it anyway..... Ah am sure there be a reason for it.......

Yes T it still could show up in Indiana...

Paul Elias bought it. He is an Ebay wheeler dealer. He buys autos and then re-auctions them.....
