I have an 82 corvette that ran fine but I wanted to upgrade the chip in the ecm. Put a hypertec chip in it. The car ran at a high idle with that in it. changed the hypertec chip out and reinstalled the original chip in ti. ran fine. Put the hypertec chip in it had high idle  again . put original chip in again cant get the car to run.  Removed the aircleaner . Poured small amt of fuel it throttle body. Car turned over. I think the fuel pump is shot . Any help appreciated.

Going to need more info...it does crank over?, does have spark?

BTW real close to you is Dave Wright. He just went through some fuel pump problems on his cross fire.

With the multiple times of removing/installing the Prom(chip), it's possible one(or more) of the pins got bent. I would first double-check the prom installation.
The Hypertech prom would prolly need some time to re-adjust the idle speed, but it won't be able to relearn until the engine is at operating temp, and the ECM goes into "closed loop", usually about 5 minutes or more, at idle. Then you would need to drive it some.

You may want to try the original chip again to see if that remedies the situation.  Do you get any spray at all from the injectors , even for a second or two when you try to crank?  You should be able to hear the fuel pump buzzz in the tank when you turn the key "ON" it will pressurize the system and then quit.  If you dont hear it buzz when the key is turned on then either the pump is history or its not getting power.  The fuel pump relay is in the same area of the ECM, you may have disturbed the connector to it while changing the chip.  Make sure all connections are tight.  The fuses for the ECM and he fuel pump are in the fuse panel under the dash near the top right corner (where they are easy to get to Confused)  Both are 10 amp.   You can check the wiring going to the fuel pump by removing the rubber bib around the gas tank filler neck, there are two wires that connect to a round plastic button, one is the feed from the fuel level sender and the other is the power going to the fuel pump, sorry , I cant tell you which is which, you may want to check voltage on these.  As Joel mentioned above the EMC will have to relearn after the battery has been disconnected. You will have to drive for several miles for the computer to relearn. Crossfire19822010-01-01 06:06:41

There is no spray. will crank over.  Will check the pins on the prom & Does try to start when a small amt of gas is poured into throttlebody.

checked the fuel pump fuse and its ok.
there  is  no buzz when turning the car on that is why i think the fuel pump is dead. will check under the gas filler rubber.

I'm with Joel.  Check the pins and contacts on the chip.   This is the most likely.  If you don't see a problem there, check all the wires in the area that could be moved, tugged, etc.  You may have pulled something else loose.

And the computer does need to relearn programming after any change.  As Joel said, warm it up and drive it.   Get it over 40 mph on the drive and hold the speed steady for a few seconds.  The idle may correct itself.

I would also check the pins and contacts. That is the most likely problem.
I have the hyper chip in mine with no problem in that area.
If you do need to change the fuel pump, it is not difficult, just tricky getting the unit out of the hole.
Note how the wires are connected so you get them back the same way.
And replace the sock on the end at the same time.

Another tip on the fuel pump swap - check the rubber hose connecting the pump to the metal fuel line.  If it shows any signs of wear replace it with the proper grade of rubber.

The chip controls the fuel pump, so Joel's idea of a bent pin would explain not hearing the pump run.  That seems like a first check.

I had a little bit of this problem with starting, and to stay running, while my '82 was in the shop for general maintenace. While moving the car outside, my mechanic said the car stalled and shut down. Eventually, with numerous troubleshooting trys and replacing both air throttle valves to no avail the car would not stay running.

Searching the car from front to back, we eventually found that the fault was in the fuel tank. Not the sending unit mind you, but the attaching hardware had failed. The sending unit has a hose held by 2 teflon clamps (pictured above) that is in turn attached to the fuel line leaving the tank and going to the engine/fuel pump. While both of the clamps over time had become 'brittle', one of them actually broke at the geared teeth and allowed the hose atttached to come undone and pretty much just rerouted the fuel right back into the fuel tank...allowing just enough fuel to reach the injectors and start the car for a few seconds.

So, I would also look at the sending unit assy and make sure all of the hardware that is attached, is in fact, attached and in good condition.

I replaced those teflon clamps with typical radiator hose clamps. The car runs like a champ now!

And keep in mind, this issue is only for the '82 MY...the only C3 with a in-tank fuel pump.

That 2 inch section of hose in the tank should be suspect in any 82 that has running or stumbling problems.  I changed my fuel pump about 2 years ago and my hose was in bad shape but when changing the pump on a friends 82 about a  year ago the 2 inch hose LITERALLY fell apart in my hands, it crumbled to dust as I removed it.  We also replaced the in-line fuel filter after replacing the pump.  I didnt cut the filter open to see how much of the hose particles were in there but Ill bet it was full.  Stumbling problem went away immediately.

Update:
Put new battery in and tried to start but did not hear the fuel pump charge( whine) so will be checking all connections. Removed the rubber at gas tank filler found the wiring and hoses to be in good shape.
Feel the fuel pump is culprit.

Look around in the battery compartment for an inline fuse and check it.  The fuse for my fuel pump relay is mounted in the battery compartment.

I ordered a rebuilt ecm from ecklers and installed it today. The vette started but would not stay running. tried 3 times but each time it sputtered and backfired thru the throttle body. will not idle or stay running. Ordered new fuel pressure relay from ecklers and is on it way.

Was thinking about putting a 85 fuel pump in it but not sure how to install it.  Looking for a C3 mechanic near me. Any help appreciated.

Where is Brockport, NY? The fuel pump is not hard to change. When you put a new ECM in there it needs to be driven so it can learn, it should smooth out once it does, unless there is something else going on. I put the '85 pump in mine and it ran much better. The old one could not deliver the volumn needed at higher revs. Don't worry about the higher pressure because the throttle body has a pressure regulator.
Good luck,
Dave

You need to determine what fuel pressure you have, if any. You should be able to buy/borrow a pressure gauge from a parts store. There is a shrader valve in the fuel line by the throttle body, with a screw on cap on it. take the cap off, screw the gauge onto the fitting, and crank it. See what kind of pressure it has. You actually should see pressure there for a few seconds even without cranking the engine.
It kinda sounds like it's getting just enough fuel to start/sputter, but obviously not enough to run. With the air cleaner off, can you see a decent fuel spray from either/both of the injectors for the few seconds it runs?(might need a helper for that).
