Hi
I'm a resident to the C3 forum but i need expertise of my fellow forum members. This weekend I'm going to check out a 1964 convertible vette for a fellow forum member. He's over a 750 miles away and I'm only 50 so I thought I'd do a recon for him so to speak
now I'm only doing this out of the kindness of my heart so any help would be appreciated.

anyone have pictures of the vin and body tags and there locations

anything specific to this year model I should look out for.

Its a original numbers matching car so what color should the block be

I know convertibles are known for leaking so are there some trouble spots to watch out for

Pics of engine bays from guys with original engines would really be helpful

Any advice in general that will help me do a rough inspection

Thanks in advance
J

VIN/Trim tag will be riveted/screwed to a dash brace under the glove box.
Engine color will be "Chevy Orange".
You'll want to look for pretty much the same things you would with a Shark car, as far as frame/birdcage rust, especially just in front of the rear tires.
Check to see that the headlights work! These are electric lights, and they use two different switches to operate them...be sure they both come on, AND rotate properly.
Check for large, or uneven gaps between the doors and the front fenders...the front ends on early Mid-Years are prone to sagging, so you might see a larger gap at the tops of the doors than you do at the bottoms.
Anything over 1/4 turn of the vent window crank without movement in the actual window means the vent window regulator is worn....very common issue.
IF it has an electric antennae, check to see if it works...all the way up, and all the way back down.
IF it's a fuelie, it should start very easily, and idle nicely.
Drum brakes all around...if you get to drive it, be aware of that...see if it tends to "pull" in one direction or another when stopping.
Look to see if the bumpers are straight, and mounted straight...they tend to sag a bit at the outer corners.

Lots of stuff to look for on Mid-Years, and with prices the way they are even on not-so-great examples, it might be a good idea to get another opinion, IF your check seems to point to a good car/buy.

bird cage - look behind the glove box and up - should be able to see condition of the cage.

frame - check rails and locations Joel references.

all convertibles most likely will leak along the seal with the top of the windshield

If he says matching numbers - he should be able to prove that with block number , also includes color & trim codes on vin tag. gauges should be black background iin the cones - low/high rpm based upon the engine (high is a 365)

check (feel) backside of body panels for smoothness and/or repair spots

check all gaps as indicated.

engine bay - air filter has 2 forward facing intakes, should have all shielding, manifold covers should be "natural" metal color, rattle can spray ? is it restored or "original"

should have some information of any engine rebuilds, suspension and steering rebuilds

there will not be an electric antennae on a 64 and most likely NOT a fuelie.

headlight buckets should operate from switch on left - up & down.

look for stress fractures around the rear bumpers

I can send you a writeup I did when evaluating a 63SWC.

Hello All!    I am the member who has interest in the car and was extremely impressed when scrappy78 contacted me and said he would be willing to look at the car.  The three photos I received from the owner are POOR at best!  I truly appreciate all of the input in this project.  Hopefully we'll know more after this weekend!
