I've been in the market for a chrome bumper C3 for a while now.  I found a car at vintagevettes, LLC that had promise.  So I made a few calls into them, got some typical information - confirm matching numbers, discuss condition of the car, the ususal.  The sales manager suggested that he type up the one page contract and fax it to me because "sometimes looking at the numbers on paper can help". I said fine - send it.  Anyway, I sent him an e-mail saying I was going to pass but counter- offerred to pay 94.5% of the asking price.  Certainly not a low-ball, particularly considering the car has been in inventory for 6 months.  Below is the exact response I got from the sales manager. Needless to say, I will not be buying from these guys:

"You must fallen and hit your head recently.  I want to personally thank you for wasting my time on this deal.  I really think you can’t afford this type of car, and you need to be looking for a certified used Honda or something.  That way you won’t pay too much and everything works for you, plus you won’t have to worry about a 36 year old car not working right.  Good luck finding a nicer car at this price range; trust me you won’t!"

The top sales guys usually aren't in "internet sales". I'd forward his response to the sales manager.

Email emboldens some and allows others to make complete fools of themselves.

One company I worked for had a policy that email was for data transfer only.  If you needed to send an email for other than data transfer, get up and walk to the person you are wanting to send it to.

This really kept down the incidents of email wars and flamings that are part of the culture.

This idiot doesn't get that you have a voice to everyone here and that he might need to rethink his position of flaming people in the future.

I would definitely mention to his sales manager that since you are a member of the C3VR (explain it in small words so he understands who we are and how big the circulation is) you felt obliged to post this response for all to see.

You may be suprised at the response you get.

I would definitely speak with the owner/Sales manager, and let them know how at least ONE of their sales staff is running business off. You stated you were going to pass on the car, but you did at least make an offer. Seems to me like a sale would be better than nothing, which is what they have now.
Thanx for the heads-up on these guys.

And by the way, correct his grammar and composition (show the corrections) when you send his response to the manager.  That really pisses people off!Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

This forum is great - I feel better already. Adam's Apple - I did counter offer with an amount that equated to almost 95% of his list price.  I sure didn't expect that kind of response.  Anyway, I did mention in my response that I would make sure the corvette forums were made aware of the way this was handled.  (If you see a similar string in another forum I apologize in advance). I also called to speak with the owner - no response yet!

Now lets say he turned around and said I cannot go any lower for you on the price, I wish I could, but we just have too much invested.

What would your response have been, would you have bought it?Tongue

It never hurts to offer a lower number, they can always say NO!, I just don't understand people these days. I would say the owner would have NOT given you a response like that one, I agree with the others, find the boss and let him know how is company is being represented.
I would also throw in there that you are a member of C3, and the folks on the forum are having a field day with your sales reps comments. Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

I would definitely keep attempting to contact the owner or general manager. Most of these places have a sales, finance, and general manager each having a different mission. Many of the sales managers are that arrogant but the general manager usually sees the big picture. Someone over there should be made aware of our site and the astronomical number of bad references we can independently give out. I feel sure you wiil get at least an apology.

i think we should all pick the same car, get the sales dudes name, request him, and start to waste is time on five dollar offers less than the asking price, funny if ya got 100 people emailing on the same car and undercutting each other by 5 bucks. just an evil thought.

I got a call from the owner. I have talked with him once before and he was very helpful and reasonable - he has apologized for his sales manager.  The sales manager apparently thought he had me in the bag and was counting on the sale. I am not sure how he came to that conclusion, but if he genuinely believed it I could understand a little frustration - but not being 1/2 step from being totally postal!!!

Anyway - I am still in the market!!!!

Few things..
Im not saying this is not 100% dead on true, but some things to keep in mind.

Spam brigade - I definately would not do that.  There is a law on the books in certain states called interference of electronic commerce / interference of commerce. Even if this guy was 10000x worce then already said. he did nothing illegal. The responce could be and the forum could be held liable.  I've seen this happen 1st hand on another site.

V V- LLC - My dealing with them was the complete and total opposite.  I was looking at a 74/75 from them when I bought my 81.  They could not have been nicer and more helpful.

My thought, you cannot condemn a business because of the actions of an idiot.  The manager said he'll take care of it.  MY THOUGHT, call the boss and deal with him on the car, you maybe surprised.  A little good karma may be extended.  See if he'll take care of YOU.  Work this to your advantage

I am on the fence on this one. I agree with Kebo's comment above. However, I think a car enthusiat forum IS the approriate place for a member to share a bad experience. One has to be sure to keep his comments factual. Beyond that criteria, I think the initial post was appropriate.

I want to clarify that I was kidding and in no means had any intentions of sending the merchant e-mails concerning their business practices.

I do however believe that by the 5th amendment that myself or any others have the right to speak their piece about the business practice displayed by this fellow. It was not meant to be slanderous but rather was a statement of fact.

All that being said I still want ta know which one o dem dadburn cars all of da fuss was about!

In my opinion, asking for a 5% discount from the asking price is very conserative and certainly no reason to warrant such a reply from a salesman. When I bought my 66 from ProTeam, I offered them 15% below their asking price and they came back with a 10% discount.

I agree with Kebo and Ranger. I think the original post was appropiate but disagree as to other members getting involved with emails to the dealer. I think Nopolis took appropiate action by bringing this situation to the owner and that salesman will probably be selling used Hondas in the near future.

Dont get me wrong, the orig post is 100% appropriate.  A 5% disc is well within margins..  Me, I'd call the boss offer 11% under and take 9%...  You never know...
