Cinor (Cindy, C3VR member that lives in Saskatchewan) has offered to put together our 2019 Gathering which is slated to take place in the Western part of the country. Well, Saskatchewan is above the western part of the country, just a bit north.

Part of the challenge of putting together the annual gathering is finding one or more people to help put it together. So, the fact that we already have someone willing to put one together makes it pretty easy to decide where to go.

We usually put out a vote for a handful of places, but since we already have someone willing to plan the event, I want to start by first seeing if we have enough people with the desire to attend the gathering if it were in Saskatchewan, specifically the city of Saskatoon.

I think if we get at least 20 people that it will all be worth it. But hopefully we'd have a lot more! I look at this as an opportunity to experience a whole new part of the world that I'd likely otherwise not go. So, maybe you'll feel the same.

By voting "Yes", you aren't committing to attend. You're just stating that if you are available when the time comes, you'd want to and would attend in this location. Just looking for interest level at this time.

Thanks!

Question: Would you be willing to attend a Gathering in Saskatchewan, Canada in July 2019?

Click one of the following choices to submit your response. (NOTE: Be sure to select the correct response, once you make your selection you can not change it!)

1. Yes! If it fits my schedule I'll be there!
2. No! I have no desire to go to a gathering in Canada, I'll only go if it is in the US
3. No! Because it is too far for me. But I will likely go if the location is closer to me.
4. No! I won't attend any gathering in 2019 regardless of location

WOW - that was quick...!!!  Shocked

Drove through the province once years ago returning from a family vacation in the Canadian Rockies to Minne-snow-ta.  Other than that about all I know of Saskatchewan is that's where Patty's brothers go for duck and goose hunting in the fall.  From our place in Colorado it would be a solid two day drive to Saskatoon (according to Google Maps).

It would be a first to have a Gathering in a "foreign" country.  Wink  If your passport isn't current, or you don't have one, get going now!

I was hoping for Southern California for 2019, but I can stop there on my way to Saskatoon.
Just don't make it for Labor day weekend (NCM 25th Anniv caravan).
Or the weekend before (Carlisle).
Or before July 4th (too much snow in the Rockies).
Or after September 15th (too much snow in the Rockies).
Around the car show in the Rockies (Black Hills?) would work.
OK, I'm in.

Maybe it's only Ontario Prov.
I can sneak in the back door.

BTW, It's ONLY 1875 miles from my house if I go through Ontario to Windsor and then I75. 31 hours of driving would be 4 days.

If I go I90 to I94 it's 1930 miles and 30 hours.

Can you get a hotel south of the city? Then it won't be so far. LOL

I will warn you right now if you go through Ontario you are gonna be there for a very long time. Speed limit is 90 km and with campers and motorhomes you will find yourself doing 70 km a lot of time. There are only passing lanes and not a lot of them. when I drove through it rained the whole time and was foggy, believe me you do not want to take your eyes off the road cause on the one side its a looooog ways down

Have to agree with Cindy that going over the top of Lake Superior through Ontario would be a beautiful drive it will add a lot of time to the drive.  I'd suggest this:

- if you live north of (or near) the New York/Pennsylvania border zip through southern Ontario into Michigan (reenter the US at Point Edward/Port Huron), take I-69 to Flint and then catch I-75 north.  After crossing the Mackinaw Bridge jump on US Hwy 2 and ride it through the Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin and Minnesota to Grand Forks, ND.  Then take I-29 north to the border and Hwy 75 to Winnipeg.  The rest is easy from there.  This route will take you through some beautiful country (not all 4 lane freeways either) and it avoids Chicago.  (an alternate would be to zig-zag through North Dakota from Grand Forks, cross the border in the middle of no-where, and return to civilization at Regina)

- if you live south of the New York/Pennsylvania border or south and east of Lake Erie and want to avoid Chicago swing around the west end of Lake Erie, head north through Ann Arbor to Flint and follow the rest of the route above.

- if you live farther south into the east coast the route above will probably be a bit out of the way.  There are other options to the west for avoiding Chicago (can you tell I'm not a fan of the Chicago area - getting around or thru the Minneapolis/St Paul metro area is no picnic either during construction season).

Haven't paid attention to how the US/Canadian exchange rate has been doing lately but be aware that north of the border petrol is sold by the liter so don't be shocked when the numbers on the pump appear to be zinging by in a blur!

When I use to live in Maine, and cross over to the Canuck side, we would be held hostage until we traded fiddleheads for a LaBatts, or a dollar for a Moosehead, or dad would farm us out for child labor for a Molsen.  LOL

I just peeked at the poll tally and would like to offer a couple of observations.

  1. If you live in the eastern part of the USofA AND you attended any of The Gatherings held in Nevada, Oregon or Washington state you actually traveled farther than going to Saskatoon.
  2. If you live in the eastern part of the USofA and a location is selected in either the western half of the Mountain time zone or in the Pacific time zone (for the most part anywhere west of the Rocky Mountains) you will most likely travel farther to that location than to Saskatoon.
Neither of these observations apply to a traveler like DWRIGHT.  LOL

All good points, Norsky.   We really just need about 10 members (plus guests) to make it worth it.  We only had about 25 for Cincy, and it was a great time.  Seems most of our gatherings have been in the 20-30 range the past few years.  So with 11 members already saying they'd go, we're pretty close having enough to make it worth it.  In my opinion, anyway.

Don't forget DaveM and the Mrs. They live in NJ and have made all the trips out west too. Like me, they make it a vacation.

I am sure we can put together a caravan from the east coast.

Well, there are 12 members saying they are interested. That's 20-24 attendees.  I think anything over 20 is worthwhile.   As Jim mentioned above, just being anywhere in the west region is going to be a hike for many of the northeast folks that go to all gatherings.  So the only difference with a Canadian location is we're gonna need passports.

History says members on the west coast do not participate in the annual gatherings, even when the event is scheduled in the west. Will next year be different? I doubt it.

In my OPINION, it doesn't matter where we have it, it's usually the same people who attend every year. That's not a bad reaction, just that the venue is not used by those who it was originally suppose to benefit. My OPINION is we should plan the gathering to benefit those who attend. I'm not against Canada, or Cindy and Sara, they are fun to be around, just make it so the regulars can travel a reasonable distance.

Honestly, we try to take a different route anytime we drive down that way.  There is always so much to see that I just enjoy the trip.  Sometimes I plan a way that takes us through different areas where I know that I want to stop.  But really, no matter which way you go, its all just about the drive!!

Sara has brought up one of the main reasons for having The Gathering in a different region every year - to venture around this continent that we call home.  The rotating of regions makes it less of a trek for folks in the host region to make it to a Gathering.  Add to that being able to spend time with folks we have only met online via the site - AND - spend some more time with folks we have met at past Gatherings.

To address another point made above: I've attended 3 of the 4 Gatherings held in the Western Region - 2 of them were west of the Rocky Mountains.  Both of those Gatherings were well attended by folks who live west of the Rockies.  To the best of my knowledge the 2013 Gathering in Colorado was the only one not attended by anyone who lives west of the Rockies.

My hat goes off to those who have attended Gatherings that have been held on the opposite side of the continent from where they live - east or west, north or south.  Taking another look at the Gathering Map (click here to see) there are still lots of places to venture to...!!!

I also tip my hat to those members who have stepped up and helped to put together a Gathering.  It is not an easy thing to do and takes some serious time and energy to put together an agenda of interesting things to see as well as coordinating lodging and eateries.

It's not West coast, it's Western region. We've just never included Canada before.

So inquiring minds would like to know - just how would the region lines continue north into Canada?  Ermm

Gee, I hope so. I got kicked out from some transgressions in my younger days. Was told I wouldn't exactly be welcomed back.

You can find various "facts" on the web.  One claims 7 yrs, one 10 yrs, some forever.  They let me in when coming to Buffalo thru Detroit...I was ready to have to take the US route if not.

I'll check with my Sis-in-law. She works border patrol on the US side in Buffalo. I can make a huge effort and call myself...

Not sure if it was mentioned. The NCM Caravan is  August 28-31. I've got a 6 week camping trip starting late May to July in Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier NP's. I was going to take the vette west then down the coast but could head to Canada instead. That is, if they let me in and it's well enough before the NCM Caravan as that is also already booked.
