I have driven the east side of it a few times. Very pretty drive. One of the trips was to meet the gang at a car show in Skyomish. Leavenworth is a neat town to visit. There is a 50's burger joint between Wenatchee and Leavenworth, I think its near Cashmere. They have a no trophy car show there in the summer.

Here is a link to Leavenworth. Its a way cool town summer or winter.
Hwy 2 takes you from the rocks, wheat fields and Pine trees of the east side of the state to the beautiful, forested snow covered mountains of the west side.
Hope you can make it.

Thanks guys!

To check routing from Bend to the Stevens Pass area I used Google Maps and it initially showed heading up I-5 through Portland, ringing around Seattle and then heading east on US Hwy 2 (426 mi - 8 hrs 26 mins).  I don't neccessarily like the idea of heading west to go east so I massaged the route to come up through Yakima (349 mi - 8 hrs 22 mins).  Guessing that is a bit more scenic even though I'd be back-tracking a little bit on US 2 between Leavenworth and the pass.

I was just curious which way would be a more scenic drive (and more fun in "The Beast"...!!!).

Rough cut on the trek would look like some long days in the saddle:
1)  "The Ranch" to Big Timber, MT (925 mi - 14 hrs 21 mins)
2)  Big Timber, MT to Bend, OR (845 mi - 14 hrs 42 mins)
3)  Bend, OR to Stevens Pass, WA (349 mi - 8 hrs 23 mins) +
Stevens Pass, WA to George, WA (100 mi - 2 hrs 33 mins)
4)  George, WA to Miles City, MT (814 mi - 12 hrs 34 mins)
5)  Miles City, MT to "The Ranch" (699 mi - 10 hrs 54 mins)

That's a touch over 3,700 miles in a little over 63 hours, which works out to averaging 59 MPH.  Maybe I can improve on that average a tad in "The Beast"Evil Smile  LOL

Are we there yet...?!?!?!?  Thumbs Up

Up through Yakima is way better than running north on I-5.

South on I-5 is a different story though!Wink

Well a change in plans has forced a change in routes.  After Patty's week in the woods is over she has decided to get a ride with the American Hiking Society folks back to Seattle on Saturday, the 17th, and then take the train to Eugene arriving at 9:20 PM.  She has booked a room in Eugene for the night and I'll pick her up there on Sunday morning.  So my run up the east slope of the Cascades to fetch her is out.  Angry  Now I need to remap our route back to Minnesota.

I do have another question on getting to Bend though.  Which is the better (or more fun) road to take south from the Columbia River - 97 or 197?  Google Maps picked 197 because it is shorter time-wise (by 5 minutes).  97 is shorter by a few miles.  Wacko

Norsky:  If it's not too late to change, there is direct air service from Seattle to Redmond.  Fare look up was $175 one-way (taxes included).  I'd hook you up on United Express but I'm not sure the savings is worth the hassle of flying stand-by.

Yep - too late.  Patty already has her train ticket and motel room booked in Eugene (train + motel > plane).  Thanks tho'.

btw - she is flying Alaska Air from Minneapolis to Seattle

Still wondering about the better route south from the Columbia River - 97 or 197.  Anyone driven both and can recommend one over the other?

Thanks!
