If you live in any of the states in the West Region (WA, OR, CA, MT, ID, NV, WY, UT, CO, AZ, NM), please reply to this thread to give us some suggestions for our 2013 Gathering.  We need the name of a City & State, and a suggestion for the best time(s) to visit there.

If you do not live in the West Region - Please do not make a suggestion in this thread.  (You may comment on suggestions made by West Region members, but please no new suggestions). We want to give the locals to those areas a chance to give us their first-hand opinion on good places to go.

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion! We actually had a Gathering centered in Carson City a few years back, and we did drive around Lake Tahoe.  It was really beautiful there and of course we had a great time.

As much as I (and others probably) would like to return, I think we need to focus on areas that we have not had a Gathering yet.  So the Lake Tahoe area and Bend OR are out.

Got other suggestions!?

Last week they opened the LeMay Auto Muesum www.LeMaymuseum.org In Tacoma, WA. For those outside of the Northwest that doesn't know of the LeMay Collection, the LeMay Collection is listed in the Gunieuss Book of World Records as the worlds largest privately owned auto collection. This is a multimillion dollar museum and a spectacle to see. There is also an abundance of things to see and do here in the Great Northwest. As for the best time to visit the NW, good question. I just heard on the news that every state in the nation (except one) has seen above normal temps so far this year, can you guess which one hasn't? Yup, Washington State. I would say late August early September would be the best time for a gathering here. Can someone fix my link to their webiste? Thanks.

Well because I live here I would have to say Sonoma Ca. in the heart of wine country, sometimes referied as "Gods Country",within  +or - two hrs you can go east be in the Gold County Brian Stearns neck of the woods beautiful country, go west and pick up Hiwy 1 go north or south you are on the Ca. coast line, go north on 101 heading towards the gaint redwoods small towns along the way beautiful country and lets not forget  the three county Emerald triangle, go south to San Francisco, born there and alot of things to see, Fishermen"s Wharf,  The Castro, for those inclined to do so you can dine naked there if you wish, there's Infinon raceway ten minutes out of town, there are so many cool things to do and see in Northern Ca. its too bad theres not enough time, you know people you don't all have to caravan to one or two places, do your homework and pick your own posion, and if you want to go to Tahoe its bout 21/2 hrs on Hiway 80-50 from Sonoma

Hello,

I'm thinking somewhere central CA or Reno...ish. I'm not a Las Vegas fan but, lots of cheap flights in and out for the "rest of the worlders" and there is plenty of places to stay.  San Diego is a wonderful city and weather is good just about anytime of year.

I like southern UTAH Brice canyon Zion etc.  Stay in St George.

Also like Sonoma County.  I have a great place with free parking 1 block from fisherman's Wharf. If anyone is staying there sometime.  My wife and I are staying there for the second time this year.  Got grand kids in the area.

Jelly Belly Factory is in Fairfield my home town.  Wine tasting is good but that road can become a parking lot real quick.

As much as I'd like to have everyone come visit the NW, I've got to agree with tb2k82ce. I spent two weeks in So. Utah, visited 5 National Parks, 3 National Recreation Areas, and a ton of other things to see all centered around Moab, UT. If anyone is a mountain biker, Moab is heaven. You can rent bikes, jeeps, ATV's, white water rafting, it's a georgous area of this country.

I would like to suggest Flagstaff, AZ. It is situated on the old route 66, in addition to it's proximity to to several other points of interest, the climate there is really nice that time of year. Some ideas of nearby places to visit would be the Grand Canyon, Sedona, the Painted Desert, Petrified Forest The Hoover Dam, etc. Or you could just stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona..lol. It is 2-1/2 hrs North of Phoenix, 3 hrs drive from Vegas.

If I had a second choice, there is Durango, Colorado, White water rafting on the Animas River, There is an awesome loop that can be made up to Silverton, over to Ouray, (hot springs), Down to Telluride, Dolores, Cortes,(Mesa Verde Cliff Dwelling Ruins) & back to Durango. It really is a breathtaking adventure in the Rockies. Not sure of the weather though, I drove through a mild snow storm there once on 4th of July.

We used to live in Salt Lake City (no, we are not LDS).

I have taken a motor home on the "million dollar highway" which is between Ouray/Silverton/Durango and it is breath taking (once I took my eyes off of my white knuckles).  You can also ride on the ONLY narrow guage railroad left in the U.S.  Some curves are so sharp, that the front of the car and the rear of the car (the trucks) are on the track, but the middle is out over NOTHING!  Mesa Verde was very spiritual.

We have also stayed in Moab and there is a LOT to look at around there too.  In fact, part of my wifes ashes are to be scattered off of 'Dead Horse Point State Park', which is a side trip on the way to Canyonlands National Park!

But this thread was for the western members to bring up suggestions..so I should just SHUT-UPExclamation

It is a long drive uneventful drive to the south rim of the big ditch.  But Sedona and the drive down will give you a good run.  There are some small tours to be had that are interesting.  I like Flag Staff I just would not want to take the ride to the ditch from there but I like the north rim much better so take that for what it is worth.

My daughter went to ASU northern campus.  So I have visited Flagstaff a few times.

LA has big bear Lake (nice drive) but the link you gave wanted me to sign in and give them my first born.  Well may be not the first born.

Problem with LA is cars.  You got Disneyland, Universal studio, Knot Berry farm (great chicken dinner) the list is endless.  Then San Diego Zoo 3 hours south. But maybe cause I live close I'm not excited about any of these.  Of course because it is in my back yard I would be there and event help organize it.

Adam

May be we should have a post as to what most people that would come out to the Western Region would like to do?

1. Nice drives with your Corvette

2. Tourist attractions:
Amusement Parks
Scenic beauty
Other _______________
3. Rest and visit with friends

4. Good eats:
Mexican
Italian
American
Japan
All or any of the above

5. Mix with a Car show
Corvettes only
Old time
Low Riders
all the above

Like in San Diego we have all of those Car Clubs.  Most would like to come out and show of there cars I would guess.

Know what people wanted to do that were going to travel the longest distance would be helpful I'm thinking?   Or am I thinking to much?

I looked at the survey think but is only lets you ask one question at a time as far as I can see.

On that link, you can just go past that request form.

Just didn't want to list everything out here myself.  But, yeah, traffic is outrageous.  So are the distances between attractions.  I've had enough of the big attractions myself, disney, knotts, etc, but some of our other members may not have.

The canyons of Southern Utah would be fun. California wine country also sounds fun too. Never been to Flagstaff so that sounds interesting. I would prefer to stay out of major cities. The traffic would may group drives difficult, especially given many would not be familiar with the area.

California Wine country is nice but for a group drive it is not. Basically one road, nice country but not for a group drive.

Now there are some nice drives in the area.  Maybe someone from the area would know more.  I was raised in Fairfield not far away but left shortly after high school 40+ years ago.

Have done the wine run a couple of times.  Last time a year ago but never in the summer or on a weekend.  I would bet there are some grid lock areas on that road.

the wine country is all over northern Ca., the Sonoma and Napa  Valley's  being the most famous, they live next door to each other, Hiway 12 for sonoma and hiway 29-128 for Napa, they run parallel to each other so if you leave sonoma heading N. through the wine country for 18-20 mi.s take a right on Calistoga Rd, climb a couple two lane windy hills and drop down into Napa Cty to a stop sign, thats hiway 29-128, go south through the napa wine country and return to sonoma from the south, one big loop, gridlock never seen it but traffic can get slow 35-45, what most tourist don't know that on the napa side is a real nice two lane road called  Silverado Trail with swoopy turns and fairly long straights that runs parallel with 29-128 bout 1 mile or so east, speed limit is 55 and radar protected, check out Wilkinsons Hot Springs and within a block the Hideaway in Calistoga, both owned and operated by the Wilkinson's since 1952,  the Hideaway is my favorite, they do Corperate ans group stuff and I know the people well, ask for Carolynn, but regardless theres more to see than just the  the wine country.

Well,  I would suggest Colorado, specifically Colorado Springs or Woodland Park.  Lots of drive areas that are fun and engaging.  Now we have Bondurant at the International Raceway for a fun halfmile oval to drive on.  There is the drive up Pikes Peak on pavement, average travel time for the racers -- 12 minutes.  There is a castle under construction with fire breathing dragons in the mountains south of Colorado Springs.  Clive Cussler has his auto museum in Denver with cars that he has written into his books.  Much fun place, excellent for beautiful drives and country.  There are several trains in the area, river rafting and of course for this year the special forest fires galore.

Best time of year -- June, flowers in bloom, nice warm weather during the day and cool nights for relaxation.

Sounds like we have a number of good suggestions:

  • Tacoma, WA / Northwest
  • Sonoma / CA Wine Country
  • LA area / Big Bear
  • Utah / Bryce / Zion Canyons
  • Flagstaff, AZ / Grand Canyon
  • Woodland, CO
When do we condense the locations and vote?  The more important questions are - When do we leave?  and

ARE WE THERE YET???!!

We also need best time of year for each, might help with people's vote.

Add Sedona to the Flagstaff area it is 1 hour south nice curvy road.  Great place to take pictures lots of shops for the ladies.

Look it up on Google earth to get an idea of the country.

If you are doing Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon you need to be there before schools let out.  The same times apply for Sedona.  It gets crowded if you do go when school is out and the weather gets hot (it is a dry heat like your oven).  I would say late May early June. You could go as early as April-May but that is most likely to early for most people.

If you did Flagstaff as a center you could go north 2hrs to the Grand Canyon or south 1 hr to Sedona.  Or you can stay and shop in Flagstaff there is a great leather goods store (10 years ago)  and a few place close in that are nice to visit.

Same months apply to southern Utah but it would not be as warm.   You could also do the North rim of the Grand Canyon which is my favorite side of the big ditch.

When it comes time for voting I would recommend that you check out Google earth for some samples of the area.

Because there are not a lot of us that live in the areas that we are recommending could I recommend that the voting be in two parts one to choose the top three spots.  Then give people a couple of weeks to provide what they like about those and then do the final voting.

I know that would help me in the final choice.

Hi folks,

I have been thinking things over and I think Eileen and I would be good anywhere LA to NM.  Sedona, AZ is a very nice area and is a drive to Flagstaff or the Big Hole in the Ground.  These states out here are pretty big and crossing the deserts can be very demanding on your car.
