Hey gang.

I was wondering if we should make our gathering more "public."

By that I mean instead of calling it the "Annual C3VR Member Gathering," give it a name like "C3 Vette Fest" or something and look to attract as many C3 owners and enthusiasts as possible.

I'm not sure, but I think we'd be not only the only C3-focused event, but the only traveling Vette event.  I don't know of any other event that changes locations each year.

To make this more public, I was thinking we could look to get a corporate sponsor, like MAM or someone else.  The only drawback to getting a sponsor that I can see is that would pretty much preclude us from being able to visit competitors in the future. For instance, Bair's is looking to host us in 2015.  Although, that could be fixed by seeking a different sponsor each year.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this idea.  We could start it as early as 2012.

Thanks!

I have no problem with it being open to anyone, but I don't go for the corp. thing. I think we may be tying ourselves down doing that. Without them we can do as we wish on our week end. We could look for tours of places and such, without being comitted to them.

A C3 fest at a different location every year sounds good. The big ticket sponsor I think should be changed every year and maybe one close to where the fest will be.Thumbs Up

Would Mike(Mid Am) have an issue with us using the "X-Fest" moniker at other locations, if Mid Am wasn't a part of the event?
Opening our events to everyone might be good, might be not-so-good...hard to say. I'm sure there would be more cars & bodies attending, but if the event this year is any indication, the added cars/bodies might be small.
wouldn't hurt to at least give it a go. I'm also not really into having a "Corporate" sponsor for our events, tho it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I would be otay with having an event close to a C3VR supporter, or other parts place/restoration shop, etc., and have an opportunity to tour their facilities....just not necessarily have the event at their facility. I think that kinda ties the whole show to the one place....
Just my thoughts...Thumbs Up

What is driving the idea? More participation I’m guessing. While I have not attended any events work and not having a operational C3 are the biggest issues.  But I have followed a lot of what seems to go on at these events.
Pros
·         Open to more people
·         Larger group of people to share with
·         Promote membership in C3VR
·         Strangers to make friends with
·         Possible ability to get special discounts from a sponsor
·         Sponsor may pay for some of the costs or provide trinkets
·         Sponsor promote C3VR event through their web site and email list

Cons
·         Could get to large and lose family feel
·         Harder to manage
·         Group starts to click up by not encompassing strangers (new or non-C3RV members)
·         Too big to get into some venues

I’m a simple mind so looking at Pros and Cons seems like it would be a good idea.  If you agree maybe you can add to the list.

Last year we tied to make it open to all C3s (although late) and really didn't get many more C3s except local. I don't know if some one such as MAM would want to sponsor an event NOT at their place. I think if we do go the sponsorship route it would probably be better to get a new sponsor each year (like that's easy) to keep from not being able to do events and tours that the sponsor doesn't want. Anyone who puts money into something will exert some form of control. I, for one, would prefer to be independent and do what we want. Although on the other hand, last years event at MAM was fantastic and I can't think of anything I would change except long drives in the rain to get there. As Joel said any of these options would not be a deal breaker for me. I plan to attend if at all possible. I will submit to the will of the people!

Dang Barry... I know I have pre-Alzheimers but I thought for sure that it happened this year.Question

Old age is a creeping up on us and I'm fighting it all the way.

I think different sponsors at different sites would give a variety of venues along with potential new members.

Mike (and the MAM Gang) definetely know how to throw a party, no doubt about that.  And I hope that C3 Fest continues, grows and is a success (unlike the NCM's failed attempt).  But this is our member gathering and IMHO it should stay that way.  Getting it too large takes away the fun for me.  If I want large I can go to C@C or Funfest or Bloomington Gold or etc.  Most of the C3VR gatherings have been held away from larger events by choice.  Yes there have been some gatherings that have had events in the neighborhood when we've been there, but our envolvement was voluntary.  Personally I like it that way.

Thank you Jim....what you stated was more like what I wanted to say....
I wasn't all that big on the Mid Am sponsorship of "our" Gathering, but in the end, it turned out ok. But...I also said while we were there that we would not participate in another one like that. It just wasn't the same as any of our past Gatherings, imho. The size of the group was just right, tho.Thumbs Up

I realize(kinda) how hard it is to co-ordinate these things...it ain't easy, and not a lot of the C3VR members will step up and help out. The ones that do are usually overwhelmed by the enormity of it all.....I think this may be one of the biggest reasons for doing the "Sponsorship" deal...it puts 99% of the planning/execution of the event in someone else's ballpark.

I really think an event in the general area/vicinity of a C3VR Sponsor/Supporting Vendor is an ok idea...but it still needs to remain a C3VR event.

There...I'm done. Cool

well...almost...Embarrassed  As to the original question of opening up the event to non-members: I thought our Gatherings WERE always open to non-members, if they knew about it and wanted to come?

Thank you Jim & Joel. I was afraid I would be the only killjoy so far. When attending our C3VR gatherings my intent is to add faces to my friends I have come to know only through typing. Yes I also love meeting new people and there are plenty of large gatherings where I can do that. If I had to try and sort out the people I really want to meet and spend time with through a large crowd of people it would be just another Vette gathering. Not that I wouldn't attend, but wouldn't be for the same reason I go to C3VR gatherings the way they are. Patty and I had a great time in Effingham this year. The best part for me was meeting all my family members from this site.

So in a nut shell my .02 a big.............Thumbs Down

What if we opened the group to people that do not own a C3 !!!! Shocked the horror !!!

I tend to think we have a "brotherhood" that we have developed and the relationships that have been created as a result of the forum and most of all the annual and regional events.

Terry has it pegged - if I have to "search the crowd" to find everyone and we are scattered in several places - where do we go ? who do we hang out with ? who do we meet ?

Besides - how to pick who rides as co-pilot ?

shrimp & grits anyone ???

I tend to agree with the small crowd. It is a C-3 crowd, keep it all C-3's. I like the smallness of the gatherings, you get to meet everyone, chat and visit. I enjoy the FAMILY atmosphere of all our outings. A large group of people only makes a large group of people. The person who mentioned that it would get to big with public, and create clicks and mini internal clubs, was correct. I would compare it to going to church in the city and going to church in the country. We are all family and the smallness keeps us close. The continunity is gone when we lose contact with the group. The sponsor idea is good, but is mostly for their benefit. I understand the need for help in planning, but DISTANCE is a major factor to helping. We are so spred out, it is tough to get together to work on details.

Since Ive never been able to attend one of the gatherings (until now)  I was reluctant to say anything but since others have mentioned it, I too like the idea of the gathering being primarily C3VR members.  Not that Im anti-social, but my main purpose of attending is to put faces with the names I've come to know here on the forum.  Im looking forward to meeting you folks.

My answer to the "Take it public" is NO. I have to agree with most that a large public gathering takes away from the the family feeling that we have here. I really didn't even have enough time to meet all the folks in Effingham. Anything larger/or open to public to make it absolutely impossible, making it like as several people have stated, just another C@C or Funfest. I do like the idea of hooking it up with a sponsor if C3 Fest in Effingham is any indication of what is possible when doing so and on the other hand it sounds good simply doing things with just our input such as what the Gathering 2012 is shaping up to be. Maybe switch off every other year wirh the style of gathering, sponsored/our own. Either way we will make a great time Exclamation

We are the website that became a car club.....

Not too many of those out on the web...

I dont have an issue with corporate sponsors but that could become a sticky situation if a vendor gets mad or upset that we put all of our eggs in the MAM basket (as an example)and decides to drop their site sponsorship.

I think we need more site sponsors to build the site stronger and thereby gain more memebership.

I always try to encourage any place that I order parts from to please consider becoming a sponser on the site. I hope that Adam isnt upset by that, but I figure we need all the help we can get.

I liked the size of the past gathering, as a new face there was plenty of opportunity for me to meet alot of you. Granted there was not enough time for me to meet everyone. The venue was right and I enjoyed the seminars, but just hanging at the hotel  having some beers, shooting the bull and making new friends was the absolute best part.

Maybe we can find out if theres a local vette club in the gathering city and see if we can partner up with them to generate a bigger crowd. Kinda like Ebo bringing the C3VR people to the Vettes at the Lake event recently.

Just my thoughts.....

Happy just to be a part of the site.

Wow.  Miss a day (or two), miss a lot!

On the topic of corporate sponsorship, I don't have an opinion.

As to opening to the public, I hear the cautioned downsides, but my view is, "the more the merrier."  Here's how I see it:

I'm not thinking this would ever get as large as a C@C or some of the other large, stationary events (maybe I'm just being naiive).  I agree, I love the closeness of the events I've attended, but I also love that at almost every event, I end up meeting new, wonderful people to extend my and Candi's Corvette Family.  Yes, there are some to whom we're closer than others (and it's possible that sometimes we may not spend as much time with them as we like when meeting new folks), but in the early days, some of those folks that we're now close to were new to us.

I don't have a true "bucket list," but I've recently thought an interesting item would be to attend a Corvette event in every state of the union (Hawaii might be tough!).  I'm glad to continue moving around the country with you folks and still want to meet more people.

Here's a suggestion - what if instead of trying to pull others in, we go to different regional events as part of our gatherings?  Corvettes On Woodward (Dream Cruise) in Detroit for a central gathering?  Black Hills Corvette Classic driving across South Dakota for a Western gathering?  By taking our group to others, it gets people involved, exposes C3VR to other folks, but technically still allows us to be our "own" group.  I do realize this could hamper our independence a bit, but I'm not sure it has to.

Bottom line, like Will Rogers said (I may be paraphrasing), "I've never met a C3VR member I didn't like."  I hope to meet many more and encourage lots of new people to join over the coming years.

I kinda agree with keeping it C3VR. The 2011 gathering (see, I got it right) at MAM was a blast, but the only part that bothered me was that there wasn't much time to spend with a lot of people that you wanted to meet and hang out with. When we go to the mega-events thats fine but I think we should keep a more manageable size for the C3VR gatherings. I DO NOT think that we should tie our gathering in with a major event, as there are just too many things to do outside of C3VR. I want more time with my buds!

I have attended a few Gatherings in the past and enjoyed them all.
What I like about them is the tours to points of interest.
Car museums, mountain rides and views, wine tastings, sponsor plant tours, dune buggy rides, go cart racing, Crater Lake, Tail of the Dragon, etc.
Sharing these times with friends is as good as it gets.

So it doesn't matter to me if it is open to non-C3VR members, non C3 owners (even Clint) or if we have a major sponsor.

Just keep moving it to new locations.

Well I guess I don't understand why a big sponsor is needed other than organizing the event..I guess it does make that part easier..if it does pose to much work for the few to set things up then possibly a group of us get together and take tasks per day of the schedule and organize each one..since the hotel is the homebase then where the event goes each day wouldn't complicate or conflict with the other days..really though I wouldn't go to site see..the drive would be enough for me..but parking on a aircraft carrier would change my mind real fast!! If a sponsor is chosen then maybe possible to do a day with them then off on our own would be ok also..I would love to visit Bairs in 2015..but not for the whole time..events as small as Corvettes for Chip don't give me enough time to spend with the local amigos I have here..let alone all the others that would be at the annual event..I love the cars but the person behind the wheel would be the reason why I would go.

You got it, Rich! It's the company as much as the event! That's why I wouldn't prefer to have the Gathrings as part of a larger event. I would like to spend as much time with friends WITHIN the club at a Gathering. Just my .02.

Ebo I was staying out of this thread because I have not been to a gathering.  But you got me on your comment.

Guys we are not a click maybe we should stop talking like we are a click.  I joined, then stayed and became a life member because of a number of you all (doing my southern imitation) welcomed me helped me and did not make fun of some of the stupid stuff I asked.  One even went as far as to connect me up with a link on ebay for something I wanted.  That is going the extra mile.

I will say some were a bit standoffish especially on Wednesday nights and I stopped trying that venue a long time ago.  I do not know nor care if that is available anymore because of that.  I do not go to the Crossfire or the CE forums because they suffer some what from inactivity and can be a little standoffish sometimes.  I know that there are good people on all of them, good info on them and a number of the guys on this forum belong to those also.   But whereas I try to connect up to this forum every day I check the other much less frequently.

Be careful of what you wish for you are either growing or dying.  I'm personally against the dying thing at this time.  To grow you have to be open and inviting.  Take it public offers some advantages:
1.   1.    It is a good time to meet new people and get them involved in the C3VR family.  Does not mean you cannot have time with your personal friends it must means making time for getting new friends.
2.   2.    May help with the organization of the event
3.   3.    You get to park your car in front of Yegar’s house
May be it should be both some public some private.
There is nothing wrong with having it public and having a members parking area so you can easily find forum members.  I like that idea.

Gil, I never said that only C3VR members should be invited! It would be a good way to attract members. But the C3 fest in Effingham (at MAM) was supposed to be open to all C3s but there were only a few that were not already members (and some of them joined!) that attended. What I said is that I wouldn't want the the C3 Gathering to be part of a larger show or venue such as MAM's funfest or Corvettes at Carlisle because there would be too many things going on to allow any real time to spend with the group. The Gathering at MAM last spring was a blast and a highlight of my life, but even with all that I really didn't feel like I got to spend time with all the people I wanted to (maybe that's what they wanted! Embarrassed ). There is a time and place for everything. We love everybody and we have members who no longer have their C3 or have never had one! And ebo is just jealous that we were the only ones allowed to park in front of Mike Yager's house! (to tell you the truth, the only reason we were allowed to park there is because my wife has MS and would have had trouble getting up the big hill to the house!) I hope my point is clearer now!

Short and sweet !!  I agree with Joel, Dave and Jim.  I think that Mike Yager will continue to have a C-3 fest.  I will see him this weekend in Chicago and see how he feels about it.  I seem to recall the a C-3 feste is on the MAM Calendar for 2012 !
