USA Today has an article today about how to not let the high price of gas interfere with your summer vacation. Seeing as how I'll be leaving for vacation/the 2011 gathering a week from tomorrow, I was interested.
Plot the most efficient route: Ok, I'm going from Indianapolis to Effingham, about 2.5 hours west as the interstate goes. Step 1, drive over two hours north to the start of Route 66, travel the mother road, missing Effingham entirely and going two hours into Missouri before turning around and heading back to Effingham. CHECK!
Lock in costs with a pre-booked package: Plan is to go as far or as short a distance each day as we feel like doing. Other than Effingham, no hotel reservations made. Hopefully will find some really cool out of the way places to stay! CHECK!
Consider redeeming loyalty/frequent flyer points: Hotel points? That is a possibility. Frequent flyer miles? Even with all the traveling I do, I don't have enough points to take a skydiving trip! Besides, I can't see me leaving the Vette at home. CHECK!
Slow down for greater fuel economy: Really?
Take your most fuel efficient vehicle you own: That would be my bicylce, and I don't think I could ride with luggage and Candi for that far. Although there is a Route 66 Trail designed for biking and walking. Maybe someday! CHECK!!
I'm going to drive my Vette well out of my way and not look at the pump when I fill up. And I'm going to enjoy every mile - especially the one that pulls me in to Effingham to meet up with all of my friends!!!

Well, I was going to post the prices for GAS her in N.E. Penna. BUT, on a lighter note I'll take your advice and not look at the pump. Put the card in, pump the money in the tank, take the reciept and go on my merry way. 
DON"T look at ETHEL, she's hiding in the tank, not the pole beans.
