Terry,
I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the use of a Bra on your beast? I remember you had it on from Seattle to PF. Has it done as expected .. do you still use it? Reason I ask... I have had a couple good dings on my front, and I was considering getting one.. anyone else can chime in if they like. My biggest concern is it might avctually chafe the paint.

Ray

It will chafe the paint...at least to a degree. Debris can also get caught under it and scratch the paint.

I have one on my daily driver and overall, it has protected against chips in over 105k miles of driving. When I take it off to wash the car and clean the bra, you can see a slight line where it rubbed against the paint.   It will mostly polish out, but not completely. For my use, I think it's been a good trade off. I'd rather polish it out occasionally rather than pay for new paint.

I don't have a bra for either Corvette...they each have a few stone chips already and I drive them in good weather and don't push them even then. I've considered buying a bra for each but decided it likely wasn't worth the effort for the kind of use they get. Then again...one big stone hitting the front can make me wish I had bought one. In a collision, it won't matter.

You have to decide if the trade off of stone chips vs. some slight scuffing of the paint finish is worth it to you.Gunslinger2006-12-10 17:39:04

I put one on the '74 for a road trip to the NCM once...ONCE.
It did chafe the heck out of the paint across the front. The wind flapping it around will do that. If there is enough paint/clear on the car, it will buff out.
Terry actually put some 3M plastic sheeting under his bra before making the trip to PF. I think he said he had no wounds to report upon returning to Moose-Land...

Ray, as you will note, I first used the 3m clear tape then put the bra on over the expensive paint and as Joel said it was a wonderful thing, I pulled the 3m clear off and she is as new. I now will do the same for my 1996 when I go the Reno, no chips on my front ends.. From Terry in Moose landLOLspielman52006-12-12 15:16:38

I put a GM bra on the C5 cause I hate cleanin the bugs & crap off of the white paint every 50 miles. It does a great job. This is bra number 4 for me. I have put one on each white vehicle owned previously. They do what they are supposed to but like most things they need to be maintained too.
They make a speed lingerie bra that you are supposed to be able to pull off and hand wash that is supposed to be pretty good. I liked the concept except when I quesioned the rep about what happens when you get tar on it. He couldn't answer how to remove it. I refrained from buying it. They do carry a lifetime warrenty. I just was afraid my lifetime would be spent with a big glob of black tar or a nice white spot on it.

I have  a  78 S.A. car.  I have  the  type of bra which covers the front end, up to and including the lights. It does protect the finish but detracts from the style. Also it's a small chore to remove/put on at shows. Does anyone know of a "mini bra" for the sharks? Something that would protect but not detract from the look of the car?

Besides rubbing on the paint, if you leave it on all the time and it's in the sun alot you will get diff. fading on some colors. They make a clear tape and also a clear spray that can be removed easy. I've seen guys with C5's at the track that use it on the lower quarter panels behind the rear wheels so they don't get rubber on the paint from burn outs.
They do make a smaller bra for C3's that just goes up to the lights.

Didn't all the bras get burned in the 60's & 70's....maybe if someone is really worried........they could develop a padded bra.......to protect even more!...............just kidding on this bra stuff! If it looks good flaunt it!!!

I would never put a bra on my front end, this black paint is so touchy.  I get swirls from micro-fiber towels.  I have two new chips from last summer but will still not use a bra, this would cerently ruin the paint. I've used quit a few bra on other vehicles and was never happy with them. That just my 2-cents though.

I used a bra on my trip home from California after I bought the car.  It worked ok, but all my stone chips are beyond the headlights (fenders and hood), so I don't know if it helped or not.  I still get stone chips every couple of times I take the car out (there is a lot of construction going on in the Austin Texas area).  I have at least 6 or 7 chips now.  Does anyone have a good way to fix them?  (touchup paint and Langka?)  I asked this on the body forum.

Anyone have a recommendation as to which bra to use?  Eckler's carries one that they call "Original Factory" and of course there is Covercraft.  It will be going on my white '78.  Thanks!!!

Adam, as you can see above I've had one on my 1976. I just had a new paint job before my trip to last years C3VR Gathering to Tennessee. Every body was concerned about rubbing, damaging the new paint and so on. I put down 3m Clear Coat tape first, all over the car to save rock chips and road debris damage. I made the trip over 9000 miles and not one chip. I have now left some of the Clear Coat Tape down permanently. Like where the gas nozzle rests on the car, under the door handles, were you thumb pushes against the paint, over chrome that is exposed to the tires, the under body in the rear where the rear tire are exposed, and to this date no chips. To answer your question any protection will work if you are smart to protect your vehicles paint first..Good luck..TerryThumbs%20Up

Could someone tell me where you get 3m plastic sheeting, or tape?  I am not familiar with that product.  I have never put the bra on my 82 CE.  I would like to try the 3M product under the bra.  Will the plastic pull off without harming the paint?
