This is only for the 1968 and 1969 owners.
What makes the gas door lid stand up?
The bezel hooks to the gas lid door with a hinge pin.
The 1971 thru 1977 have a spring type of apparatus on the hinge,  but I cannot find anything for the 68 to hold the lid open while refueling.
Looks like their needs to be some type of spring,  but I have no idea where it would go to hold it open. The 1968  assembly manual, The corvette restoration guide and the corvette catalogs don't show anything to help for this particular model year.
the door closes just fine.
The 68 is a class of its own!!!!!!

I pulled the following gas door hinge comments from a Corvette Forum discussion that might help you:

The 68-70 gas doors don't use a spring, like the 71-82 gas doors do.
On the 68-70 bezel, there is/was a spring steel clip, riveted to the underside of the bezel. When you open the door, the clip is "supposed" clamp on to the the hinge, holding the door open. The problem is, with time and use, the clip weakens and doesn't hold the hinge tight, or breaks off all together.

If the clip is still on your bezel, you can remove the bezel and squeeze the clip a little and it may work again to hold the door open. If the clip is missing, your probably going to need to replace the whole bezel assembly, if you want a properly functioning gas door.

The following is a link to another more lengthy discussion on the gas lid hinges for 68-70 Corvettes:

http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c3-general/1118410-68-71-fuel-door-spring.html

This discussion thread includes some pics that might be helpful....

My '69 has the steel clip mentioned above and stays up quite well when re-fueling.

I took a members advice and put the hinge holding the bezel and door in a vice and it compressed the hinge pin enough to cause the door to stay open just fine, and closes just fine. The clip was missing but the compression on the hinge did the trick.
Thanks for the info.
