I like the edges on the insert polished up. Looks sharp. Might not pop on a silver car though. Are those things cast aluminum or pot metal?

They are heavy.  I'd say pot metal.  By the way, just what IS pot metal, and why is it call such?

I always thought it was a zinc and iron alloy but Wikipedia says:

Pot metal—also known as monkey metal, white metal, or die-cast zinc—is a colloquial term that refers to alloys of inexpensive, low-melting point metals that manufacturers use to make fast, inexpensive castings. The term "pot metal" came about due to the practice at automobile factories in the early 20th century of gathering up non-ferrous metal scraps from the manufacturing processes and melting them in one pot to form into cast products. A small amount of iron usually made it into the castings, but too much iron raised the melting point, so it was minimized.

There is no metallurgical standard for pot metal. Common metals in pot metal include zinc, lead, copper, tin, magnesium, aluminium, iron, and cadmium. The primary advantage of pot metal is that it is quick and easy to cast. Because of its low melting temperature, it requires no sophisticated foundry equipment or specialized molds.
I read somewhere else that it was called pot metal because it was a cheap alloy used for making pots.  I run into it a lot on my 1929 Chevy--it doesn't repair well and is used on the ignition and door locks to name a few...

There is a difference in the "Egg Crates"  The 70 had just a fin with no bottom ridge. Just flat to the back. The 71 & 72 had an edge, very slight not far from the top/edge of the outside. That edge was also chromed, the remainder of the unit was painted body color. I'm not at all able to post pictures, hope you can decipher what I mean.

Your timing is good. I was actually sitting on the floor next to my drivers "crate" and started picking at the edges with my fingernail. All edges vert and horizontal are chromed. Someone did a real crappy respray on her. Covered up the egg crate chrome as well as the stainless (or aluminum?) along the bottom of the windshield where it meats the fenders. Dopes. I found a couple cracks and bondo....so ya the paint job will be more work. Its not even in the planning stages....I wanna drive this car this summer not fool with it. Shoot, I've only owned it since Nov 26th with the only miles being the drive home when the truck refused to pull the trailer over the mountains....about 90 miles. So I'll strip the trim pieces before summer.

On the '72, the metal along the windshield on the hood is SUPPOSE to be painted.

Ya...the stainless trim along the rear of the wiper door should be body color, as will the two trim pieces on the tops of the fender edges/corners.  Thumbs Up

OK You had to drive me crazy trying to remember that line - finally got it, Lola by the Kinks!

Couple of questions:

Rodney - the chrome trim on the horizontal fins does it go all the way to the right where they taper down?  I think they do but not clear in your pic.  Bubba also painted about everything 0n my car but the windows!

And Joel, the extreme edge of the stainless on the wiper door cover (next to the windshield) is not in fact painted, is it?  Not on mine and doesn't look like it in your pic?

SIgned - coming out of hibernation Mario

Welcome back, Mario! Clap

And yes, ONLY the very edge of the stainless is shiny, but not the whole piece.....I shoulda been more precise in the description...good catch! Thumbs Up

Iirc, they were painted like this to reduce the glare created from the shiny stuff right there in front of the driver's eyeholes.
