I know that this is a frequent topic on C3VR, but the diagrams I've seen so far are no substitute for digital pictures of an entire vacuum assembly from start to finish, so once I get mine fixed, I'll post one if it isn't available!

I have headlamps that are stuck in the open position, and much of the vacuum system appears to be in order, except for two lone hoses I found poking through the firewall on the driver's side that lead to nowhere in the engine compartment. I've posted a picture for reference. Also, the lower dash on my newly-acquired C3 leaves something to be desired, and as such, I haven't successfully located the manual override switch. Can people help point me in the right direction?

Lastly, there's a knob sticking out between the glove box and vent on the passenger's side that I have no idea what it does, can anyone identify that?

Thanks,

Paul

EDIT: Can I not post pictures under a free membership? If that's the case, I'll gladly pay to join, I'm just curious. Thanks!

The manual override on my 79 is in a panel just below the steering column.

Is there vacuum present on these lines when the car is running?

This link helped me a ton when I was doing mine.....

Obviously select troubleshooting section....

Rook: I used that resource, but I'm still confused as to what I'm looking at exactly. Do you mind posting a photo of your lower dash with the override switch in its correct fitment? Thanks, Paul

I sure can, dont have the car with me here tonight so I will post as soon as I can.

A few more questions....

Do the hoses have any vacuum when the car is running?

Can you see if one is attached to the headlight switch?

Is there a 3rd (shorter hose) present?

Where are the hoses going to (or coming from) on the engine side?

Can't see if one is attached to headlamp switch-- haven removed that part of the dash. No vacuum on either because they don't appear to be connected to anything that would make a vacuum - at least they don't have any connection to anything inside the engine. I didn't see a third hose inside the engine compartment near these...

the third hose should be under the dash....between where the pull down should be and the head light switch...If theres no vac present, you may want to start at the manifold work your way up to the front checking the hoses. The vac hose replacement kit is a snap to install....even a schmuck like me could do it. You may want to invest in that kit. It has color coded hoses and all the barb fittings. It still doesn't cover any actuators or relays but its a good start. That engine gotta be making vacuum someplace.

I think there's definitely vacuum from the manifold, I mean I don't think the two hoses coming out of the firewall have vacuum, and I think they are the ones from the switch and the override, but they don't connect to anywhere in the engine right now. I also don't think my override is present, but I need photo evidence to confirm. Do I have to be a paid member to post photos in my forum posts? The system gave me an error when I tried to upload pics.

Do you know the exact part it attaches to under the dash? Is there a diagram available? I'll email you a picture of my dash so you can see what I'm looking at, and maybe point me in the right direction, since it won't let me post here.

There should be two line come through the fire wall one come from the manifold through a filter and a check valve it goes to your headlight switch.   then there is a line from your headlight switch to the headlight-pulldown switch then that line goes back through your fire wall up to the front of the car where it splits and feed the headlight relays.

That part of the system is easy enough to trace.  From what you said I'm guessing that the line from the manifold is gone.  You need to confirm that you have a line from the back of the manifold to a filter then to the check valve and on through the firewall.

Paul  I pulled your email form your profile and sent you some PDF files.  Adam is correct when he said we are mostly old farts who can not see good.  Geek

Adam you need to tell my wife I cannot see good so she gets off of my case when I'm looking some of the finer two legged beach dwelling specimens.  Thumbs Up  She is not buying it from me.  Off topic sorry.

Back on topic
I found a Visio Drawing I did of the vacuum system I will email that to you as soon as I find the key that goes with the numbers I placed on the lines.

Being old not only the eyesight goes.  Just as long as I can remember where my lovely wife lives I cannot go to far wrong.

sunglasses,  I think I will go out and purchase a pair.  I told youall (that is southern Californian) for everyone.  Eye sight is only one thing to go with age.  I just cannot remember the others.

I will be emailing you the pdfs I have on the vacuum systems.

With the bigger pictures I agree I have no idea what one of the two could be one could be going to the headlight vacuum switch up in front.  The other one I have know idea.  You can clearly see the check valve it should go through a T and one side of that should go through the firewall.

That is for the vent...it opens and closes the vent right there next to the knob. IT should pushin/pull out, but it may be stuck.
I been looking at the pics....looks like someone has removed the over-ride knob, and plumbed the headlights in direct.
Can you find where those two hoses go on the inside? You say they are not attached to anything under the hood, but where are they coming from to start with? The panel that goes under the steering column is missing...that is where the over-ride knob goes.

The hoses coming from the engine that should be going inside have been looped together there. I'll edit the pics, and show what I mean, but it'll be tomorrow before I get that done.
