Hey folks:

I've got 2 mirror issues to run by the forum and see if anyone can provide some help.

First is loose ball sockets on driver and passenger mirrors causing the mirrors to change position when doors are opened and closed.  No matter how gentle I am, the driver's side always droops even when driving.  Is there any way to tighten up the mirror?
Driver's side is the stock chrome for a 75.  Passenger side is a matching after-market.

Also, on the passenger side, the rear mounting screw is coming loose.  I took off the mirror but the screw just spins as if there's no anchor.  Is there a way to get to this short of drilling a hole in the sheetmetal part of the door under the panel?

Thank you all for any help you can provide.
Jim

You'll need to remove the mirror glass to fix them, but you can fix them. The glass is held in with 4 small dollops of a silicon/rubber sealant from the backside. You'll need to soak them in paint thinner, or mineral spirits to soften the silicon, so the glass will come out without breaking. Once the glass is out, you'll see a sheet metal strap across the ball of the mirror socket. This flat strap holds the tension on the ball/socket, to hold the mirror in place. The strap is peened to two standoffs on the mirror back. The peens loose holding power over time, and it just gets loose. You'll need to re-peen the two posts over the strap. Some have gone another route, and drilled into the posts, and inserted screws to hold the strap tight...either way works. If peening the posts, you need to be very careful to not hit them too hard, and damage/dent the front side of the mirror....I did that on one of mine once....Censored

I think it's much easier, quicker and less aggravation just to replace them. Ask around if anybody has some used mirrors or purchase new.

Joel you did not break that just for the picture did you?
What if you adjust the mirror and then use a bead of silicone to hold it still?

Jim, I have recently come by an identical '75, but mine is in such poor condition that I'm changing over to the sport mirrors from the '78 - '82 series (inner supports required). The bumpers were laying crumpled on the ground so, I bought the '80 - '82 rear 'cause I'm not trying to stay original. Yours on the other hand looks good and stock mirrors are easier to change than the manual remote type but it seems like a lot of work if you don't love doing it.

Guys, Thanks for all the help. Think I may go with the silicone option until I can find replacements at a discount. I've only owned the car for 3 weeks and I'm going through cash at a pretty good rate right now. I appreciate you all taking the time to reply, Jim

Why yes, Albo, I did....I'm all aboot helpin folks out, and if that's what it takes, why not? Wink

Yeah...RIGHT! LOL
Actually, that was a mirror that Mama "accidentally" knocked off the '74 one day. Embarrassed

I took some pics of it while it were broke, to show how to tighten up the tension on them. Luckily, I had another date coded glass to put in it.
Not sure the sillycone idea will hold for very long, but it's certainly worth a shot. Thumbs Up

I have aftermarket mirrors on my '71 and have had both droop in the past. The first time I just bought a new one. Second time, I removed the glass like Joel said. Aftermarket are made a little different from stock..at least the ones I got. There is a strap over the ball with a nylon bushing between that splits over time and lets the mirror head loosen up. The strap is held on by screws, which is convenient. I bought a thicker bushing at Home Depot and replaced it. That sucker ain't never gonna move.

 This is the split washer...

This is the new washer in the bag, the broken washer and a teflon washer I didn't reuse..

...and problem solved! Thumbs Up

Just completed this repair on my original driver's side mirror.  Went pretty smooth except for one small chip in the glass from when I was trying to get it off.  I ended up using various sides of a trapezoid shaped utility knife blade to gently pry it off.  Req'd some patience but it came off eventually.

Tomorrow I'm going to install the new pass side mirror (Corvette Central, quality seems pretty good) that's been sitting in my garage in the box for months.  I was dreading the install since I thought that backing nuts would be required inside the door.  I finally looked in the hardware bag tonight and it looks like there are anchors included that do not require access from the back - cool!  Is this how the originals were installed?  Assuming this method is plenty secure?  The other nice thing about the CC mirror is a paper template is included with explicit dimensions regarding where to drill.

Hi Dave. It's hard to believe that any other method besides passing through  the door skin and securing with a washer and nut would be stable enough, though I'm not an expert. I'm converting my single driver side mirror on the '75 to a pair of sport mirrors and I've seen this discussion on the forum before, mentioning the need for reinforcement inside the door under the nuts, but I see no way to access that area, just the 2 holes (3/4") to reach the nuts. My only plan is to add as large a washer as will fit through those holes before the nuts. I'll hope that if anyone knows better that they'll speak up 'cause I'd hate to think that road vibration might cause damage to the fiberglass due to the weight of the mirrors. Let us know how the mounting works out.

Iirc, the factory installed mirrors have a backing plate on the inside of the door. The dealer(and aftermarket) installed, pass side mirrors did not....they used nutserts....sorta like a drywall anchors. For the sport mirrors, you do need the extra backing on the inside of the doors, but for the plain-jane, manual mirrors, the nutserts work just fine.
