I am ready for  new paint . It has been 22 years ago since I painted the 1968. It was painted a 1989 BMW red. It will be Media Blasted, all paint removed, and all body parts will be fitted correctly. The paint code is 974 which is Rally Red. I have the vette in pretty much original shape except the 427 435 hp, with three deuces is long gone. The second owner sold it back in the early 70's because of the cost of gas. LOL  For those who have  Ralley red is this pretty much of a orange color red. Should I go back with the original color for car shows etc. or just paint it any color of red like I did in the past.   Do I need to Jell coat after the Media Blasting or just use a good paint and primer.  Not familiar with the Media Blasting. I know not to sand blast.

Richard, I have the Eastwood dual blaster. It has two tanks, one for Baking Soda and one for your choice of media (grit, sand, glass) Also can mix both at the nozzel.
Soda will not hurt the fiberglass there are many views on utube. Fill primer/sealer will be fine.
If the car is not original I'd paint it with the color that does it for you.
I picked "Viper Red" for my project car.

Yes, thanks and I was going the soda route. Your red looks great.  What Paint did you use. I used Glasserut  base coat clear coat the first time. I though maybe the PPG with an Epoxy sealer since it is going back to the bare glass. What is the year for the Viper red color.  They seem to change red's often.

Evercoat makes a Polyester Primer/Sealer that is basically acts like a gelcoat but is also high build and sandable. PPG does as well.  It is a two part like the Epoxy, but works wonders in bonding to the original glass.  You have to make sure to seriously clean the entire car after soda blasting.  Meaning that you have to make sure that none of the soda residue is left on the car.  One missed spot and the primer/paint will start to peel due to the soda.  Not a pretty sight.  Most paint manufacturers void any warranty after soda blasting.  I am not saying not to do it, just that you have to be extremely thorough on your clean up afterwards.  Every nook and cranny.  PPG, or Spieshecker, are probably the the best paints on the market.

Just my old fart's opinion, but I think blasting is more trouble than it is worth.  I sand the whole car, which accomplishes a bit of blocking at the same time.  My local paint expert sells PPG.  He told me to put on one wet coat of epoxy primer, then several coats of K36 high-build primer.  Then block, block, block, etc.  Then more primer and blocking until you are satisfied.  Then put on a light mist of Krylon black, and block again.  You will find a bunch of spots to fix.

Have fun

Thanks I plan on high build primer and an epoxy sealer. I found a place that will soda blast the body for $600 plus. Sure beats sanding off all those layers of paint since 1968. However now I will nead a good passeger door since I found that I have too much rust in the lower door area. One thing leads to another. I haven't decided what color of red yet, red is the most expensive.

Richard, I have not started mine yet Big smile It's one of those 50 footers right now. I like the newer viper reds. Google viper red and you'll get some cool websites with lots of talk about the reds.
Reason I'm blasting mine is I'm not quite sure whats under it Confused lots of checked paint areas and where it's chipped off it looks really thick. Once I'm into it I may just do as Larry says and block. I bought all the blocks already. Now it's just about finding the time.

I painted it back 21 or so years ago. Then I just sanded it real well, used a sealer and painted it a bmw red. Glassurt paint clear coat. I did a lot of block sanding on the primer and it is good to use the krylon black spray paint to see that you are sanding correctly. Did some body work also. But now it needs to go down to the raw glass. I will know more next week after the soda blasting gets going. One big mess, I am sure. I will look at th viper reds. The original was Ralley red, and that seems to orange.
