I had a "drivers" paint job applied last year. Some of it is really good and part of it. Let me put this delicately, sucks.

Some of my trusted friends out here say one of the problems can be fixed by cutting and buffing. I'm not so sure. Look at the picture below and tell me what you think. The problem I'm speaking of is what appears to be fibers in the finish. I say there was not enough primer or not enough paint and no amount of sanding the clear coat will help. What say you?

I'm just guessing but what was the prep like.  We have had a lot of talk on the forum about prep and how important it is for any type of paint job.  I for get the specifics but the end was if you paint over imperfections they will come through and sometimes those imperfections are not obvious prior to painting.  I also seem to remember that if your paint is of a certain type it will cause the marks you are talking about when it is applied.

I will be putting a driver paint job on my car but I will be doing most of the prep work except for the final sanding which I will leave to the painter.  The company that does repair on my RV told me to go talk with their painter anytime I needed.  I took my car and while I thought the doors were aligned he showed me how I would need to change the bushing in the door pins.  I also pointed out other things and told me to stop and talk anytime.

His view is there are a lot of guys that can paint it is the prep that counts.

Yeah.....you ain't gunna buff that out....Looks to me like someone sanded all the way thru the gelcoat, and then painted. That IS fiberglass fibers peeking thru the paint. If that is what it looks like, the only way to really fix it is to go all the way back down to bare 'glass, then either spray new gelcoat, or a 'glass friendly epoxy. Angry

Yeah...this basically hacks me off. I know its a drivers paint job and I shouldn't expect too much but geez. The painter said he just needs to sand off the clear coat and reapply. I say he should never touch my car again.

He should not only never touch your car again, but he ought to refund you all your money. Including paint if he bought it.
Regrettably when we ask someone to do a, in this case, "Drivers" paint job, we have an expectation that we're going to be handled properly.
I wasted over 7K on trying to do the work with a shade tree painter. As hard as it is to pony up the money to do it right, in the end that's the money that gets spent. You either get so twisted by the results, you bite the bullet and do it the right way the second time around, Then that guy has to fix the hacks work. Or you get so pissed off with the results, you sell the car and lose the money there.
In my case I paid the 7K, then couldn't take it and sold the car for far below what the car was worth had it been done right. So I took my lumps twice. I was very young at the time, but the A**Kicking I gave myself stays with me today more than 25 years later.
The guy I sold my car to put it up for sale about 15 years ago. The way I see it, I paid for him to do the job right.
Lessons Learned. Right?

I'm at the Boise Roadster Show. One guy has a 1960 NCRS TOP FLIGHT car. He has the same flaws in his paint. Not quite as bad, but nearly. His is white so you just don't see the issues. So I'm wondering if this is very common. All of the old vettes at the show have some of it except one. It is perfect.

One local big time painter says he can fix the hood and rear deck for $800 to $1000. He is concerned about color match. The rest of the car is much, MUCH better. So I don't quite know how to proceed. Sigh...

Was his car just painted? Prolly not. You can expect some crazing, and fiber show-thru on older paint, but not something that was just recently painted. ON al older, original paint car it's extremely common to see this kid of stuff. Being a "Top Flight" car doesn't mean it's in perfect condition, in fact, it's possible to lose ALL of your paint points, and still score well enough in other areas to garner a Top Flight award.
When my '74 was painted(in '96-97), it came out pretty nice...almost show-car nice, but....I could find flaws everywhere on it. I had them re-do it SEVERAL times before I finally gave up on them, and just accepted it .
What you do with your paint deal is up to you... do you want to accept it the way it is, or force them to re-do it? Decisions, decisions....Stern Smile

Mine is 14 months old and honestly looks worse than a year ago. I cut and buffed the rear deck for a he show. It's much better except for one foot square nest of fish eye.
