I need to refurb my front grills and my side grills. Anybody have any pointers or links for doing this. On the 72 do you paint black and clean off the edges or something of that nature? This cold weather is giving me cabin fever, I'm thinking this would be a good cold weather project for me.

On my 74, I redid my front grills.  I sanded them and used a fine file to smooth all of the "casting" edges.  I painted them black with Krylon Semi Flat spray can.

Me too Lonnie....cabin feverThumbs%20Down, sure will be glad when spring has sprung!

Side grilles what are those? I have coves.... Loooow Maintenance! In my front grill I have chrome door edge molding over the fins..... (Makes it appear as it is chrome.)

My7T1 (my buddy Terry) has painted his a couple of times different colors. He would be a good resource for you to PM if he doesn't reply to this thread.

I have used the Krylon semi-Flat black on some other things and it turned out pretty well. I have cleaned them up and I think I might mask off the edges with small masking tape and then paint. I'll pick up some paint tommorow. I'll let ya know how they turn out. The side grills or louvers I guess will wait till new paint job.

Lonnie:

I'm doing my grilles right now. The exact original paint color for your grilles can be obtained thru www.oempaints.com The product is called Trim Coat and is part number 22045.  It is very priceyShocked.  Too pricey for me so I found a cheaper substitute called "Cast Blast" which is a cast iron color paint that is said to be very true to the original color.  Here is a link

I went down to my local O'Reilly Auto parts and while they do sell it, they usually have to get it from their warehouse.  Mine gets here this coming Tuesday.  Also note that the little groove around the signal covers is supposed to be flat black (perhaps only on the top and the side nearest the egg crate section).  Here is the description I get from a post on the NCRS Forum although it hasn't quite registered to me yet what that area is actually supposed to look like:

"The small thin flat section between the raised chrome edging around the front signal lenses appears black, but this thin area runs into the grille surface towards the bottom on both sides, and looks more to blend into the dark grey color of most of the grille. It blends (fades?) more, than having a clear breaking line, demarcating the color change. It's definitely very subtle."

Finally, one person said to get the gray color of the grille, he used something else.  Here is a cut from his post:

"I used a Chromabase 2004 Charcoal Gray for the paintred grill area(s) and a flat/semi glaoss black for the groove that goes around the lense.
I sprayed a semi-flat clear on the gray paint. I took a NOS bumperette to the paint shop and had them take a picture of the paint.
Most all the repro/later NOS grills have to light of a gray on them."

Hope this helps LonnieSmile

Maybe we can compare "After" pictures once we are done.

Regards,
Roger

Oh yeah, after I paint my grilles with the base coat I'm going to add a "misting" of chrome colored paint.  Another NCRS friend said he did this to his and it gave it a very subtle metallic hint which made it a bit more closer to the original lookThumbs%20Up.

And here is a little pic of the Trim Coat paint from www.oempaints.com including a pic of a can of adhesion promoter paint (which you would only need if you had just rechromed the grilles and had to paint the grey color directly over the chrome.
