Okay my '81 had a new coat of paint and clear coat layers back in July and I have only washed it since, no waxing, just wash. To ensure I get the best finish look I've waited, and been busy, but my question is now been 6 months, can it be sanded and buff anytime now? If so what is the best way, wet? Grit paper? Whatever you can suggest I'll read. Mine is a dark metallic blue.

Why are you sanding it.  Used a clay bar yet??  Are your carb problems solved??  Let me know Tommy.  Will I see you at the gathering in Effingham??

Modern base coat/clear coat paints can be wet sanded and polished 24 hours after painting. I think you'll be fine....

Dan on the carb issues yes I think we have that solved. Took vette to Dub at Corvette Etc in Charlotte, a great vette machanic. After replacing the S hose no problems since. Dub also adjusted the carb and ECM setting so so far no probelm and MPG improved slightly, from 11 MPG to 13 MPG around town. Right now it ride and enjoy, well as long as the weather around here is good, heading out to a christmas parade in a bit with other vettes meeting up to have some fun.

On the buffing the car I may take it to a good detail shop we have locally and let them do it. They have turned out great looking cars but will talk with them about the clay bar method.

Use 2,000 grit and a good polish from a paint store. Plus a good buffer and pad. A mikita buffer with a electronic control works well. Be careful not to sand through the clear coat. This all could be done anytime after it was painted. You just don't  want to put wax on the car for at least six months so the paint can settle and gas off or whatever paint does.
