Has anyone here in the Northwest had a windshield replaced?  I'm thinking of replaceing mine because of scratches from the wiper (from a previous owner) and it's also pitted pretty bad.  I'm concerned with finding a good repitable place here in the NW to do it.  Are there any other concerns that I should know of when replacenig a windshield, also the cost.  I'm not sure if my insureance will pay most of it unless it's cracked.  Thanks for any help.

Well you know cracks(bang glass with hammer) cough cough happen.  Call a few glass places for quotes and then ask them for their most experienced old fart to put it in.  You could also call a dealer to see who they use.

Mark, I just had mine redone. I called my insurance co. and told them that I accidentally damaged the windshield and before I could finish the story, they said "you're covered"!! No pictures needed. Safelite sent them an estimate and I got my check in 2 days.  $280 installed.

It's always helpful if you can get the glass out beforehand so you can inspect clean up/repair the windshield frame. I took mine out while we were prepping for paint and found a gaping hole in it. Repaired and atually stopped my mystery leaks!! Thumbs Up

Take special note of how your side trim is mounted (3-5 screws depending on if Bubba has been in there).

Make sure they retain the factory height of the glass with the sealer. Too high or too low, the mouldings won't sit the same...

Also, make sure they protect the top corners of the fenders.

Good luck!!

On a sidebar, my experience with new w/shield...A few wks ago I had a new PPG w/shield installed, guy came to my house, put it in ,charged me $200.00. Did a good job. I had my frame super clean prior to the install,so he was happy. Two weeks ago I discover a crack in the upper corner on pass. side going down for about 8". I called him back for another w/shield and asked why he thought it happened. Without hesitation he replied,"someone, while working on the interior has pulled himself up and out of the car using the upper corner to assist in getting out of the car". That person was me. Use caution everyone,I suppose it's possible.

Mark, if you really want it done right I would talk to Butch at Classy Chassis in Summit Lake.

Anything he does he does right.

Make sure they use the correct thickness of glass (ie - same as the old windshield).  Most outfits carry (or can get) windshields for our cars but the glass is thinner on most of them.  If the correct thickness isn't used no amount of goop/sealer/etc is going to position it correctly in the frame.

From past experience you also need to make sure that the screws for the trim behind the door window weatherstripping are not to long. I ruined a windshield by getting some trim screws mixed up. I put the trim back on with to long of a screw and it went through and chipped the windshield on the passenger side. It really sucked.
