So for you guys with Show Car paint jobs, or even buffed out really shinny-good paint jobs, what do you do to protect your front fenders while you are working in the engine bay.  I am afraid to even lean over the side to add oil.  Do those expensive fender mats really work, or is it ok to just get a soft bath towel, blanket, ect.  I need to do a bunch of work bringing my mechanicals up to par, and I have an expensive paint job I don't want to ruin.

A good fender cover helps a lot.  But a soft blanket will do just as well.   The key to both is keeping the bottom side that you lay on the paint CLEAN.  Any dirt will cause problems, and the dirt tends to stick on the covers, etc.   Make sure the fender is clean, not even dusty, when you put the cover on the car.

John

I use both, a wool blanket then a leather fender cover so your tools don't slide around and Ken has it, make sure the fender is super clean. NO DIRT ..

Hi John nice ride.

All the above are great I use rubber Corvette fender cover, don't have to worry about your tools sliding off. But make sure fenders are dusted first, no dust no problems. Keep them clean and drive them hard. Just the way they like it.

I have a set of Matco tool covers, they are kind of a foam rubber and stay in place pretty good.

Heed the advice of keeping car, covers and clothes clean. Dirt on, under or in any of these will scratch and scuff.

John,

I use "Fender Grippers" .......They are soft foam rubber that stays on the fender.  You can place tools on them and it protects the fenders from dropped tools or the dreaded jeans button.  For more protection, I use a soft flannel sheet over the grippers.

Oh yeah......They look cool too!

Good luck,

I'm with Terry... call it insecure, or overprotective. Bottom line is you can't take back thaat 1 fleeting mistake once it happens.

I've been using a soft rubber fender mat from Ssnake-Oyl. I bought 2 at a show, they really work well. They also make a custom fitted version for C3 Vettes that covers both fenders and the nose. I've been thinking about getting one of those someday. They are available in several colors and with the stingray logo.

Big Fish........You're on the money.

Snake Oyl makes the "Fender Grippers" & they have all of the Vette logos available.

I use some flannel covers that came in a package of shop towels.
The trick to holding any cover in place.... metal BINDER CLIPS attached at the inside lip (drip edge) of the fender.  No more covers falling off
