I just got my 77 from my dad. He took pretty good care of it but now it needs some TLC. I'm replacing all the belts, hoses will be next.
Can anyone tell me, the air conditioner doesn't work and hasn't for quite some time. I don't intend to fix that anytime soon if at all. I'd like to just remove the belt that spins the air compressor, any reason not to?

I really don't think there is but I wanted to pose this question to those that have been enjoying their vintage Vettes for longer than I.

Thanks for your help.

you can remove the belt no problem the only risk is that the A/C compressor might sieze over time but if it doesn't work anyways who cares. I have removed mine from my 76 since I don't use A/c in my car anyways the roofs are always off when driving !!!

Unless the clutch bearing is noisy and starting to fail, I'd leave the belt on. If you never plan on repairing it, then why not just remove the compressor and associated hardware?  Makes plugs easier to change.  ;)

Thanks Red 76.
Long term I intend to either pull this 350 or get another 350 and rebuild to 350/400, mid term I'll pull the air compressor and all the associated hardware and connections, immediate term the PS belt blew, just lucky it didn't damage anything, then the fan belt deteriorated so I need to replace it and the air compressor if I"m going to keep it. I think for now I'll just pull the compressor belt and let the compressor hang till I move to mid term work.

Thanks again, good luck with that great looking red 76.

Hi John,

The A/C compressor on my '78 L82 seized, so I went ahead and removed (cut) the belt. This caused the alternator belt to start squealing like a stuck pig. It appears that the alternator belt alone did not have enuf grip to drive the water pump and fan. Having the A/C belt (had to buy a new one) back on stopped the squealing. My Vette was missing the AIR pump when I got it.

I pulled the connector off the A/C clutch, and ride with the tops off and the windows down.
