Hi all,

An interesting failure.

I replaced my AC/Heater control panel last year.  It worked ok for almost a year.  Then the electric switch failed.  The AC would not come on or heat would come on when on vent.  I kept my old unit and in troubleshooting the problem I hooked up the old switch while the new panel was still hooked up.  Just bypassing the switch in the panel.  The results:  Everything worked.  Ok but, I can have the AC on and route it by using the lever on the installed panel.  I can now get the AC to the Defroster and on the heat setting gets more to my feet....  I sorta like that.  I unscrewed the electrical switch from the old panel and I think I'll mount it coming out of the center console next to the Rear Defroster switch....

All the best

Keith

I had a problem with the first replacement HVAC control I bought. It was the all plastic kind. I had to move the lever back and forth to get anything to work. Finally ripped it out and got the OEM style unit. Working fine ever since.  Big smile  (first unit cheap Chinese kind).

Hi Barry,
Well, I'll have to do that.  For now, I'm just gonna leave it like it is.  The AC is just on most of the time.  Spliting the function of the top lever is interesting  but, it can't be made to look ok. I have it sticking out between the carpet and the center console. One click - Max AC; Two clicks AC Normal etc.

The heat will not be needed here until late Dec or Jan.  It was down right cold last Feb.  Two days of the mid teens really caused havoc here.  I did not loose any pipes but, the well pump housing froze and cracked.

There have been numerous posts here about the replacement hvac controls on the '77-up cars not lasting, or even working from the get-go. There is a lot of amperage going thru the switch at times, and it seems to melt the cheapo ones fairly quickly. Don't know how you could tell the difference between the good uns and the bad uns just by looking at them, tho.
Glad you found some sort of solution, anyway....that's "Southern Engineering" at it's best!!
just kiddin! Hey..if it works, it works.
