So as I follow the directions for the steering upgrade, the second instruction is to remove the pitman arm from the steering box..

Dan, you will need a puller to get it off. The auto part stores will have it. You can buy one but you can just rent the puller. Soaking does help a little. Good luck and don't get hurt! Ebo can help you with some new swear words........which also helps!

Dan, the pitman arm is on the gearbox REALLLLLLY tight...it ain't gonna fall of. You will definitely need a special puller, and you can rent, or borrow them from most parts houses. As far as getting the steering linkage off of the pitman arm, do that before removing the pitman arm. A few well placed whacks with a serious ball-peen will normally pop those things loose.
What am ya doing, anyway? If you're replacing the steering system, you prolly don't need to separate the pitman arm from the linkage....you're swapping in the Borgeson unit, aren't ya?

I am indeed putting in the borgeson.....i dont see how the exisitng box is gonna come out with the pitman attached to the valve and the box....i probably should have pulled off the header.

When I did mine, I pulled the Pitman arm with a puller while still on the car. I moved the master cylinder out of the way because you have to move the proportioning valve and lines anyway, and took the steering box out from the top.

I took my gearbox off and took it to the autoparts store. Paid $10 to have them take it off. Mine came out easy once I removed the exhaust pipe from the manifold to make room. I only had to tweak the brake line on the proportioning valve to get it to not touch the new gearbox.
