Putting a shut off value in heater hose (1/7)

I know this has been brought up before ,however (2) questions....Dose matter what hose the valve goes in?Also what type valve should I use?

I put a valve in both hoses, completlyseals off the heater from the hot water. I got a brass ball valve with a barbed hoes fitting on each end, one hose is 5/8" the other is 3/4".
I tried the valves from NAPA because they are small, but arter a while I could not turn the handle to shut it off or open it. The ball valve is nice since the handle only moves 90 degress and you can tell if it's open or closed just by looking at it.

Just one does not help as much as the two because the heat migrates up the water in the open hose. You only need to close them in the spring and then open them in the fall, not much trouble at all.

I put mine so you can get at both from the engine compartment.

Part numbers for the valves at NAPA:

3/4 inch 660-1413 

5/8 inch 660-1414

Why cant a hose be run from the intake to the water pump ? and have the heater core hoses disconnected and tucked away neatly ? ? ? ?

I also have the valves from NAPA and agree with DaveM that they get difficult to turn after they have been on a while.  They are neat and compact but a PITA to open and close each Spring and Fall.

Tony, that's exactly what the previous owner did on mine.

I'm replacing the heater core (signs of previous leak on it) and will add shut off valves.

In my case, I live north, so the heater core is something I want to be able to use when needed.  A shut off valves allows you to quickly turn it on/off at will.  Bypassing altogether is a little more trouble since you have to drain a portion of the radiator.

I would think that a valve on one side only is enough to keep the heat out; at least most of it.

You can run one hose from the pump to the intake, and then loop the heater core hose back to itself... though, one hose is a little bigger than the other, in diameter, so, you will have to crank on the hose clamp a bit more, and keep a check on it for leaks... just a bit more convenient to put a shut off valve(got a gate ball valve on dad's car, think i just routed the hoses on mine... been a while since i've had a chance to look under the hood)...  i would lend a word of caution if you do route the hoses, that excessive pulling and pushing on the heater core pipes, might cause a leak... it is copper and solder afterall... :)
