Look to see if your original pump has any bosses for brackets on it, also. The replacement will need them if it does. Take the old one with you, as Chip says, to make sure they both match up in every way. Check the shaft sizes, where the pullies/fan go, as they do come in different diameters...

At work I used very little, didn't have anything to measure. I dorve it home and put 2/3thirds of a cup in 18 miles.Does that still sounds like a waterpump?

Are you saying you're not sure if the wp is leaking or not?

Filling the system thru the overflow is the proper way to do it, once the rad. is full. If you drain the rad., then you should fill it thru the neck first, then top off thru the overflow.
If you are loosing coolant, but do not see any evidence of a leak, then you may have a bad head gasket that is blowing water out the tailpipe. I think I would suggest have someone do a pressure test on it, if you cannot locate an external leak visually. Check the pass. side floor carpet...you may have a heater core leak, and it wouldn't be visible from the outside of the car.

Are you running hotter than usual? No leaks could mean you have no water to leak out. You don't mention the number of miles covered in all your side trips. When my pump went out we filled the overflow tank but then found the radiator was empty but the tank stayed full. Like Joel says, make sure your radiator is full through its cap then top off using the overflow tank.

If you know for a fact that your water pump is leaking, you otta change it as soon as possible so you don't have to get towed home.

Very good advice. My total miles is probably 100 miles. I did take off the rad cap and it was full. I drove it in today so I'll check it out. It's not running at all. I would change the water pump but now I'm not sure what is was because it has stopped leaking. It's baffiling me right now.
Thanks for the info crossfire.I guess you should know if you have a crossfire also. I went to Advance and they had one for $29.00.It says for heat only. I've got ac but I beleive the air is connected to a junction. The pump had one hole for the hose and one hole that has threads in it and it comes with a plug. Is this the pump I want???
Just changed mine on a 79. You do have to remove the A/C compressor bracket to get it off (real pain in the ***, as it has bolts in the exhaust manifold in addtion to a couple into the head and then a support bar down below.  DON'T unhook your A/C hoses...just lift the compressor out of the way a bit - the reason you do this is it shares mounting bolts with the water pump. My solution - good bye A/C, wasn't working anyways and I don't drive the car with the roof on.

The "heater only" pump you got is correct. That refers to the side port on the pump. It comes with a plug sealed into the top and a threaded port on the side for your heater hose.  Before you do anything else, remove that hose fitting with a 7/8 inch wrench prior to pulling the pump off the block.  It is in there tight (if like mine). I cheated and used an impact wrench - came right out.

have fun and good luck. Seal it up good with RTV or Permatex #2 when you put the new one in.

Wink Be carefull! I started out with a bad thermostat, and it turned it into a complete body off restoration project.
Check the wp shaft lenght, I bought an aftermarket CSI shortie pump and I had to do a little shim on the wp shaft to get the pulleys to line up. Not a big deal just annoying since the vette shop recommended it as a replacement, it's not worth the gas money or time to go exchange it. I went with SS bolts on the thermostat housing the old ones were rusted tighter than a ducks behind. One refused to come out no matter what I did, torch, pb blaster soak and finally drill and extract and I still ended up fudging up the threads on the intake anyways.
