I know there is a lot of discussion on the 4 speed links, I have read many of the threads.  My circumstance is a little unique so I am looking for help:

1974 C3 4 speed manual

My car was stored for four months.  When put into storage the car shifted fine.  After being removed from storage I had difficulty with reverse.  After some research I decided to rebuild the shifter.  Upon reinstall, I had reverse, but could not get 3rd or fourth (car not running, still in garage).  I assumed I installed incorrectly and removed to be sure.  I physically can't get the car shifted into third or fourth even when trying to manipulate the rod coming out of the tranny.  Third and fourth worked fine before working on the shifter.

Could I have messed up something by testing the reverse, 1 and 2, or 3 and 4 rod that comes out of the tranny.  Need some help here.

Dennis

If it worked fine before, there is prolly nothing wrong with it now. Sometimes, without the engine running, it can be really hard to get the trans to engage a particular gear. Have you tried rolling the car a little forward/backwards to see if the trans would shift? Without the input shaft turning, the splines of the synchro teeth may just be in a position to block the shift....moving the car would allow them to align, and allow the shift to take place. It would also eliminate any "bind" that the trans may be in from sitting.
Other than that, I can't think of anything that would keep you from being able to manually manipulate the shift levers on the side of the trans, and shift into 3rd/4th.

My only suggestion is that the side cover has a lock-out so you can't move the 3-4 lever unless the 1-2 lever is centered properly.  Maybe with all the work you have done, you moved it just enough to lock out 3-4.  Just shift the 1-2 lever all the way forward and backward, then make sure it falls into it's detent in the center.  Then try 3-4 again.

Thanks for the input, I think both could have been the culprit. I took apart the shifter again, reinstalled, then lifted the rear tires and........shifted through all the gears, problem appears to be solved. D
