I Hope So!!!

Back in the early spring I went ahead and changed the differential fluid in my '79. No issues at the time / just maintenance.

As I remember I couldn't pump out more than about a quart and a half using a hand pump.

I added the required 2 small bottles of GM Posi. Additive and a quart of GM Rear End Axle Lube. It wouldn't take in any more fluid than that.

About two weeks ago I started to hear and feel a very small binding in the left rear wheel when making left turns only. It was not very loud and only happened during roughly 1 in 10 left turns.

Today I added one small bottle of GM Posi. Additive and closed it up.

Then I drove in figure eights for about 15 minutes and was able to pump out only about a quart and a half of fluid from the diff.

I went ahead and added two small bottles of the GM Posi. Additive and a quart of GM Rear End Axle Lube. It would'nt take in any more fluid than that.

So far no more noises or binding feelings from the rear end during left turns or anything else.

Although I have not been able to remove all or most of the fluid in the diff. , is the new appx. quart and a half of Additive and Lube enough to really improve the diff?

Am I missing anything?
I'm hoping to avoid a costly repair.

Once the posi clutches start binding, it may take several miles of driving to get the new posi lube worked into them, so they'll stop jumping. A lot of folks will do the figure 8 in da parking lot thing, which is fine, but I prefer to just drive the cars in a normal fashion for 15-20 miles, making both left & right turns. This will still work the posi lube into the clutch packs, without the added stress of the constant lock/unlock of the figure 8. That's just me.
I'd say just drive it for a few days(if possible), and make sure you get at least 10-15 miles of highway driving in a straight line. Then pull off and make a hard right/left turn. If the clutches are gonna bind, that's when they'll do it. If they don't, and all sounds/feels well, drive, and enjoy.

btw...1-1/2qts of lube sounds aboot right. Adams' Apple2008-05-17 19:56:15

Thanks for the feed back!

In fact, if the weather is good on Monday I'll give it a run on the highway.

(And on days off of work I don't need much of an excuse. I'll tell the wife it's required follow up on the work I did to it on Saturday.)  Big%20smile
