She may be in ICU now, but I predict a full recovery and she will be better than ever when she gets out!

Sadly, my baby is now hibernating in a pole barn west of the cities until May, ...don't drive her in the winter here in da' frozen nort".

Marshall(and everyone), it's not really a function of mileage that creates the wear/damage on the gears like this. Though it does come in to play, it's not the main cause.
The main cause is...abuse, bad shifting habits, and/or improper clutch dis-engagement(adjustment or sticking disc).

Not to imply that Micki or Dave has abused the Poop Vette...far from it. But someone else owned the car before she did.
The wear on the synchro teeth of the gears is caused by the synchro rings(brass) not fully stopping/slowing the gears to the proper speed for smooth engagement. This can be because the brass itself is just slap worn out, or due to power shifting, or shifting without using the clutch. What happens it the synchro slider/coupler grinds into the teeth of the gears, wearing both down. Over time, this causes a grinding when shifting, and popping out of gear. It pops out of gear because there is no longer enough "meat" on the synchro teeth to hold the slider to the gear.

It's rare to see a trans that has damage like this on all of the main drive gears, but it does happen. It's more common to see this wear/damage on 3rd gear only, with 2nd gear damage being next most common.

So....just for your information folks, if ya have a standard trans, treat it nice! Make sure the clutch adjustments are correct, and use the clutch! Make sure your trans lube is changed every once and a while!

Micki, we know you love the poupon and would never abuse her.  We were just kidding ya a little bit and didn't mean to hurt your feelings.  It will be so great when you get her back and can cruise the highways and bi-ways again.

Joel,

Thanks for the simple, yet great, explanation of this kind of wear. Micki, I know you must very excited with the upcoming upgrades and repairs. I am very envious of you and Ken(kstyer). Enjoy it!
