I'm still debating over whether to go with a Keisler 5spd or add a Gear Vendors overdrive unit to the BW T-10 already in the car.

Is anyone here using a GearVendors overdrive in their vette?  I know many of you are using a Keisler setup with good results.

So I'm open to opinions or advice.
 Fire away, I'll be listening.

Hey Sarge, I've never ridden in a car w/ the Gear Vendors overdrive.  How exactly is it used?  I can't imagine that it is used just like a low/high rear axle on a large truck where you would go through all the gears, then switch the axle to high and the tranny to low and go through the shift sequence a second time.  I have assumed it was something more automatic, buit maybe I'm expecting too much...

Rosen(Motion Performance) did install some Hone O/D units in Shark cars in the early '70s. Not exactly a bolt-in install. Major modifications were done. The Gear Vendors set-up is no smaller than the Hone units...

My opinion , if you are determined to go standard O/D, is go with the Keisler set-up. A better all-around deal in the long run, as all of the parts needed are readily available, as well as tech help if ya run into a problem. Plus, you have the option of choosing the ratios you want.

Hey Sarge,  as you know i have a 5 speed Kiesler in my 78... i too pondered on the overdrive unit before getting the 5 speed... and, kinda have to agree with Joel that there would be some issues fitting it underneath...  even if i had to do it over again, think i've have to go with the 5 speed. There was very little i had to "modify" getting it in(being a welded in crossmember, had to cut it) though i recall you saying yours is a bolt in member, soo, at least thats not a problem... it uses a stock bell housing, soo, the T-10 bell will work... only other thing is the drive shaft, it will have to be shortened, and by all means if you do get the Keisler(Tremmec) tranny, be sure to get the yoke with the U-joint straps, not the supplied yoke that has the press in U-joint caps... good luck..

Sarge, the 5 speed is the way to go, I m so happy with mine, and it came with everything I needed, cross member and drive shaft. The fuel savings round trip to PF paid for half the unit.. I would do it all over again..Terry

Thanks for the feedback guy's. I valu your opinions and info.
Looks like the Keisler is the best bet here.

I have an old book with quite a bit of Motion info. It does have a couple of pics of the unit installed, as well as a listing of most of the mods required. Seems like the actual driveshaft was only a few inches long, if I remember right!
I think you'll be much happier with the Tremec/Keisler set-up.

The Gear-Vendors deal is really more for motorhomes and such anymore, due to the size...

Hey - two years ago I went from a 700R4 to the Tremec five speed - it was a ton of work converting the car from automatic to manual and we had to send some parts back and forth until we got the right fit for my application - but these guys got me through my temper tantrums and now that it has been in two years I got to tell you its "wild" - the great thing about Tremec is that they understand vetees and their custome trannys fit under the frame perfectly.

Hey Sarge, just thought I'd offer my .02. (it seemed like such a long way between gears on a TH350) I fell for the Gear Vendors ad before Tremec offered the 5 spd. for C3's, and though it is a fabulous product, it does leave a lot to regret. They claim you can have it installed for about $700 at a GV authorized install shop but I couldn't find one that would handle it for less than 3 times that (I didn't start looking for help til I ran into trouble) They spoke of customer service help anytime so I was game to install myself ( on a dirt driveway with no lift) they said you can easily install one in a C3 vette with a little "massaging" of the tunnel. I kept calling them cause I hated to believe the amount of body altering that was needed to accommodate it but they claimed the owner was an expert at vettes but wasn't here right now and they would have him call me back. After several more calls they made me feel like a nuisance so I gave up on getting help from them. After a year of wrestling it in my spare time, on my back, I had my buddy pick it up and take it to his shop where, on the lift, I was able to finish the job in a weekend. I mounted the switch under the ashtray door, you can drive it in "Drive" and get overdrive after 3rd without touching anything or manually shift and use the adjoining foot switch ( like the old high beam button on the floor) you would shift to low and hit the foot switch at the same time, wind it up and hit the foot switch to activate the overdrive for 1st gear, shift to 2nd and hit the switch at the same time, wind it up and click the floor switch again to go into 2nd OD and so on. Great for drag racing with a ratchet shifter( keeps you close to the power band ) but not really necessary except for the final OD. I still have to look forward to taking it back out for final repairs to the tunnel that I "delicately massaged" with an air chisel.( massive clearance issues) That poor 78 body will never be the same, but it was already a salvaged title. P.S., you also have to re-engineer the E brake cause the cross member support wheel for the cable had to move. In conclusion; unless it's a dedicated racer, I wouldn't recommend it.

I installed my Tremec and it was nothing at all like the last posting.  I did have to make the hole bigger for the shifter and do just a little grinding on the rear motor mount bracket.  It works great!  Looks like the other one needs a checklist to follow.

Thanks Jimmy.
That's funny what you mentioned about what they told you about "massaging the tunnel a little. They wrote me back and mention that the tunnel would "need a little massaging" also. And they said they have done many C3's. Thank God there are a couple more choices out there.
Thanks again Ken and Terry. All this info is very useful in making my final decision.

Boy Sarge, looking at this again, they did not have a 6 speed when I purchased the 5 speed for my 1976. Now that I have a 1996 with a 6 speed and know how much fuel I save on road trips without loss of performance, just drop down a gear or two, maybe I would go with the 6 speed tremac..75MPH shift to 6th and see 1000RPM 36 MPG. My 1976 has 3.36 rear end and the 5 speed and the TKO 600 (.64) I see 2250 at 80 MPH with about 18 MPG with the AC on. The 1996 has 350HP and the 1976 has 395HP, same engine as you I believe with the Hot cam..Terry

Kidding aside...That is a nice quaint little town. Clean, respectful, and has an old town charm. I have a couple "corvette friends" that live in O.P. Your daughter will most likely enjoy living there. Well if your in the area sometime, give us a shout.
BTW, we did have the "Snow Gods" visit us today. I plowed snow for 17 hrs. today. Good $$$ day today. LOL

Well, the decision has been made. Actually purchased. Shocked

Michele bought me a TKO 500 5 speed "Perfect Fit" transmission kit from Keisler. What a gal! It should be delivered in a few weeks. Not that we are in a hurry. The car ain't coming out til springtime.

I compared the kit from Keisler and Classic 5 spd. The kits are basically identical. Even their websites look similiar. Keisler won out. They had a better deal with the $100 off and 1yr warranty.

And I just want to say thanks again to all for the help with your opinions & experiences.  It helped out immensely. Thumbs%20Up

Sarge,
Sounds like you made two good decisions.

Picked the Keisler.

And picked Michele.

Congratulations.Thumbs%20Up

I only see one good decision.  He picked Michele; she picked the Kiesler.

Very true.
I knew I picked her for a reason. And that was back in 1983. Big%20smile

Well, I finally got a chance to install the new Keisler 5 speed this week. I must say that it is a well engineered package. Other than a couple small tweaks to the new crossmember and my screwup dinging the pilot bearing it went well.
The maiden voyage went well. Right now the shifter is very stiff and taking a bit to get used to. Hopefully it will loosen up a little bit. The overdrive gear is very nice. I can actually hear the radio now while driving at highway speeds. And the first gear is awesome. It launches very hard off the line like it has a steep set of gears in the rear end.
So all in all I'm very happy with it.
Thanks again for all your input.
Darryl
