Has anyone tried swapping to a different stall speed torque converter into an L82 model? Hitting the gas from dead stop in my '80 L82 has always produced a second of lag with the engine just seeming overloaded. I know the 3.08 gearing isn't doing me any favors in that area. However, as the L82 peak torque is hit at about 1000 RPM higher than the L48 I wondered if part of the issue could be a poor match between the engine torque curve and the torque converter in the 350 TH transmission. My guess is that Chevy would not have bothered putting a different stall speed converter into the transmissions of L82 equipped cars.

Your description sounds more like a carb/ignition issue than torque converter. A stock engine/trans, with a 3.08 rear gear ratio isn't really going to be a pin-ya-to-the-seat take-off, anyway, even with a higher stall converter.
What you described leads me to think you have a "flat spot" in the carb, prolly from a mis-adjusted accelerator pump linkage, or some other issue within the carb itself. Smile

Possibly. I drove the car for nearly 20 years before I ever screwed with the carb. The float stuck after a winter without starting it since had rocker covers off while I was putting in new valve seals, twice (don't ask Pinch). Figuring out why it wouldn't start forced me to read up on the carb and finally adjust it. Amazing, for the first time since I bought it 20 years earlier (at Atzenhoffer Chevy in Victoria, TX - yep it's a TX car originally) that when I stopped when the engine was cold I didn't have to keep a little pressure on the gas to avoid stalling. So clearly the factory adjustment was way off on the cold idle. Lot's else could be off too.

I still though wonder about the converter.  I looked up TH350's of the era and the stall speed on the stock converter seems to be in the 1400 to 1600 RPM range which seems right for an L48 with peak torque at 2,400 but low for an L82 with peak torque at 3,600.  That kind of shift in the torque curve from the L82 cam with about 220 deg duration vs. the L48 at about 200 deg just seems to ask for something different somewhere in the drive train (other than gearing).
