Hey folks,

I'm needing to replace the rear spring in my '71 big block coupe and I want to go back with the correct steel spring.   Who sells the best replacement steel spring that will yield the correct ride height without having to use longer bolts?   I have seen a lot of sharks with new rear springs that sit way too high in the rear for my liking and I dont want to have to use longer bolts that put the tips of the spring closer to the ground.  Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks.

I used Eaton Spring for my '81. http://www.eatonsprings.com

It's been in since 2001 and the ride height is still good. I went with their 7 leaf HD spring. The stock one was a soft 9 leaf. They are built to factory specs.

Some vendors sell these under their label.

Darryl,

Thanks for the information and the link to the website.  Did you purchase the spring direct from Eaton or through one of their dealers?  They say that the springs are shipped unfinished (bare metal).  Did you paint or finish yours and if so, what did you use?  Thanks.

I love your Vette by the way!  Don't see too many '80-82 models with Rally wheels.  Gives it a totally different look.

Iirc, Eaton was the original supplier for the rear springs from '63-'82. Some of the aftermarket suppliers sell Eaton springs, but they may re-label them as something else, OR they have Eaton make springs to the supplier's specs. This is why some cars sit higher/lower than they should with the aftermarket rear springs. If you can get the spring assy from Eaton, you'll get exactly what it is supposed to have, spec-wise. You can paint the spring yourself. They were originally painted with a medium blue/grey primer...looked more blue than grey, but it was just a primer, not a color coat. Thumbs Up

Joel,

Thanks for the information!  You are always a wealth of knowledge on our favorite sports car.  Sounds like I'm going to be purchasing a spring from Eaton.

I appreciate the help.
