Do you mean the
yoke has play in it, or the shaft on the trans itself?? Two different issues there.
IF the yoke is moving, there is a bushing in the tailhousing that can be replaced, but it ain't easy to do in the car, and it does take a specialized tool to do it in the car.
If you remove the yoke, and the tailshaft itself has play, it depends on how much play we're talking aboot...the shaft WILL have some play in it, even NEW. That's one of the purposes of the bushing the yoke rides in...to provide stability to the rear part of the shaft.
If you remove the yoke, look carefully at the surface of it that rides in the bushing for ANY wear...if you can feel it with your fingers, it's too much, and the yoke should be replaced. If you can lift up on the yoke, and fluid runs out, then there is some major wear on the yoke and/or the bushing...
You will normally have a
small amount of up/down/sideways play in the yoke, even with a new bushing. Don't know of any particulr specs for allowable play, but you should be able to
just feel a little.
