So, the vette has been sitting for a long time so I figure I'd change the filter and fluid in the tranny.    I haven't done it in a long time but from what I remember easy but sloppy.  I'm was mentioning this to a buddy and his mechanic brother mentions I should reuse the old fluid.  Something about old and new fluids not mixing and destroying the transmission.  I don't recall that bit of wisdom.  Any idea about what the heck he's talking about?

Tis true, mi amigo.
In certain cases, changing the fluid CAN create issue that were not there before. If you do NOT know the service history, it might be best to change the filter only, and use the old fluid. If you know the trans has been serviced in the past, yer prolly otay to do it again.
This issue is this....on a trans that has had the same old nasty fluid in it for...EVER, putting new fluid in it can flush out hidden crap out of nooks and crannies, and get pumped around to places it could cause problems such as stuck valves. Trans fluid is a high detergent oil...it cleans really well when it is fresh, so putting new fluid in a nasty trans will clean it up right nice, but can cause problems.
MY suggestion is this....drain the fluid into a CLEAN container. Check the condition of the fluid, and the bottom of the pan. If there is a lot of doo-doo(tech term used in the industry) in the pan, change the filter, and put the old fluid back in, and top it off with fresh fluid. If you do use the old fluid, pour it thru a paint strainer to take out any large chunks that might be in it.

If the fluid looks good, as in kinda redish/brown, you can still see thru it, and the pan only has a small area/pile of doo-doo then you can prolly safely change the filter AND fluid. If the fluid is black....well....don't change the fluid, and start saving for a rebuild in the future. Usually, if you can pull the dipping stick out, and the fluid is still a clear red/brown, you're good to go.
Pull the stick, and wipe it on a clean paper towel, and post a pic of it here.....that'll give us a good idea of the condition. When you pull the pan, pour the fluid out of it and take a pick of the bottom of the pan, and post it too.
When you buy the filter/gasket, specify that you want the Nylon, or brass screen filter, NOT the Dacron filter. With the brass or nylon screen, you can clean it in the future, instead of replacing it. Make SURE when you put the new filter back on that you have the word "Front" pointed to the front of the car.....you'd be surprised at how many folks never pay attention to that....the filter will bolt up in either direction, but only work properly in one. Thumbs Up

Okie Dokie, Sounds good to me.  I'll post pics later this week/weekend.  It's actually supposed to get nice around here. Thanks again Joel
