An automatic I'm guessing?

Does it get worse under heavy load?  Do you feel the shake in the seat or steering wheel?  The last upshift is the 2 to 3 shift.  Can you give us a bit more detailed discription?

I'm betting what you have is a torque converter "shudder", since it only happens in the higher gears(3rd-4th)...at least from the description. More info please!

Right now I am away from the vette. I will drive her in two weeks.
When I drive I like to manually move from 1- drive. she is smooth going from 1-3 and then drive. The intiatial engagement in drive is okay but as the tranny up shift  I guess into od the shakes are felt felt in the seat not steering. even more noticible when I give it some fuel. I iniatly thought it was missing but its smooth on all other ranges.
I hope it doesnt require tear down.
Is my trans a t-400 or 700r4

Thanks

Your '82 has the 700R4 overdrive. Your description sounds like a classic case of converter lock-up shudder. There's one thing(well, two, actually) you can try before going with a new torque converter.
1st thing: Get a bottle of GM Positrac Additive, and pour that in the trans, and drive it around for a while, shifting manually from 3rd to fourth, and stay if 4th long enough for the lock-up to engage. See if that at least helps.

2nd: Instead of the GM posi additive, go to a local trans shop, and ask for a tube/"bottle" of "Dr. Tranny's Shudder Fix"...yep, that;s the real name of it. Pour that in, and drive as above. If the converter is not totally trashed, this stuff WILL stop the shudder, 99% of the time it will stop it immediately.
If you don't have a local trans shop, or they don't have the stuff, P/M me, and I'll send ya a tube.

Adam, Would it help if I had the trans flushed out and then add this stuff?
T/c shutter does this happen on high mileage trans or tell tale to replace tranny.

Thanks

I(personally) would not recommend any kind of "flush" for the trans. A fluid/filter change might be ok, but nothing else. I'm not a big fan of the flushing trans syndrome, even tho it is good for my business...
TC shudder can happen on any vehicle, regardless of mileage. It is mainly due to calibration issues, and normal wear on the converter clutch, but a lot of times it is simply a fluid issue. Some trans fluids are just not compatible with the type of friction material used in the converter clutch. Regular maintenance is a big plus, but using a name brand, quality fluid is the biggest thing you can do to prolong the life of the trans.
One thing that causes lock-up shudder is simply the glazing of the friction surface on the clutch. This happens thru normal usage/wear. The "Shudder Fix" modifies the fluid composition to make the fluid more "slick", which eliminates the stickiness of the converter clutch, allowing it to apply smoothly, instead of grabbing/releasing.
Not exactly a scientific explanation, but hopefully it is understandable.
Lock-up shudder is not a sign that the trans is taking a doo-doo, but...if the shudder fix doesn't "fix" it, the converter will need to be replaced.
To verify that the vibration you are feeling is in fact converter shudder, drive the car at a steady speed until the vibration occurs. Then, without lifting the throttle, gently press the brake pedal just enough to turn on the brake lights...in other words, just touch/move the pedal maybe 1/2". You should see the RPMs come up a couple hundred RPM. If the vibration/shudder goes away, the converter is the problem. What you're doing is dis-engaging the converter clutch. If the clutch is shuddering, then it will stop when you press the brake.
If the vibration/shudder does NOT change, then we got to look for another issue, but try this first, just to be sure. If the complaint goes away, then use the shudder fix, and you'll be good.
