I had a 427 engine but second owner took it out and replaced it because of the price of gas, back in the early 70's.
Now I have a 327, but replacing this with a 427. I have been trying to get some of the parts I will need for this new engine before I get it all torn down, like the Intake, exhaust manifold etc,  I ordered a 11" clutch for the new 427, But now I was told that it probably would not fit the bell housing and that with a 153 tooth flywheel that I need the 10.40 or 10 3/8 clutch.
These catalog companies don't make it easy because they have a 10 /3/8 for a 427 and a 350 0r 327, also they have the 11" for both big and small block.
So is there an easy way to tell what clutch you need prior to tearing everything down. Then having to wait to get a clutch.

Clutch diameter will be mostly dependent on the flywheel used. Some flywheels will have two bolt patterns, so you can use two different sized clutches.
I don't have any of my clutch catalogs here at home, but I can check in da mernin, and see what I come up with for your application. Another issue will be splines....the input shaft of the trans fine splined, or coarse? You'll need to know that, too. You can't really go by what it's supposed to have, since the trans(or shaft) may have been changed at some point. Unless you know for sure, you will need that info.

My info says it could have either a 10 1/2"(10 3/8" outside diameter) or 11"(10 15/16" od) clutch, 10 spline. Info also shows both clutches use the SAME flywheel. The difference is going to be in the actual size of the clutch disc itself, AND the diameter of the actual plate on the pressure plate. So from this, either clutch set-up will work, but the 11" would be the better choice, due to the extra friction available.
My '74 L-48 small block has an 11" clutch, but it is the BW ST-10, 26 spline disc.
hth

btw...if you have a Pep Boys in your area, you can get a LUK clutch set from them, and not have to order/wait. They may have to get one from their warehouse, but they will normally have one delivered that day. Around here, Pep Boys is usually a little cheaper than our normal supplier, to. Worth a shot.

So if I keep the same flywheel and change out the clutch pressure plate etc the 11" will
work. Do i have to change the bell housing too.
Does any of this affect the 153 tooth flywheel vrs. the 168 tooth flywheel.
Thanks. I guess then this LUK clutch is a good one. I was leaning towards the centerforce 11 clutch set with reduce pedal pressure. Don't know anything about either one, just want a strong clutch for the BB.
