What additional aftermarket items have you installed that require the additional amperage?

Funny that you should post this today.  I just had to replace my alternator!!.  It was a tired puppy, I think it may have been the original one!!  darn GM junk, only lasted 29 years!!!  lol

Hi Scott:

I have a 400 Watt mono AMP driving a 10 inch sub - not a lot compared to some of the high end systems around today, A/C, power windows and locks.

I believe the Marche underdrive pulleys could also be a concern as well however the instructions that came with the pulleys indicated the alternator pully drives 25% faster.

I am just not sure if the 3 wire OEM set up is going to be OK with the larger AMP alternator without having to increase the wire size between the battery and Alternator.
Any help appreciated

Thanks,

Martin

I put the 100 amp alternator ( I got a chrome one from Ekler's ) two years ago and did not change a thing. Its worked like clockwork since. Very little drop at idle. I'll see you at Carlisle!

Hi Barry:

Great, good to hear.

I was looking at the wire for the battery connection and believe it is about a 4 or 6 Gauge so it would probably be adequite anyway.  I would not be drawing a lot of amperage regardless, it would just be nice to not have the stereo base cut out at idle.

Now, if it just comes in in time - being sent by USPS to Canada Post  - hopefully it will be here before the 26th when I leave.

Thanks again for your advice!

My battery on the alt wire fried with a 100 AMP unit when I upgraded - it seemed pretty light maybe 12Ga. Went to an 8 gauge wire and ran it directly to the battery. Cured the problem...

Interesting that your wire on the 79 would be that gauge.  I wonder if it was changed for my year????

I think given the amperage, I would want at least an 8 gauge wire just for piece of mind.

Hey all..sorry for getting into this so late! If you have one I would check the amp draw on the wire going to the battery with everything on max output with an inductive lead..I would make sure you don't overload that wire..if you don't have one I would still run another 8 gauge wire to the battery since you probably will come close to using close to 80 amps with everything on..the blower on high can hit 40 amps by itself..plus 20 amps on the stereo..the fuse on the amp may give you an Idea what it really is rated for max wise..
See you Friday
Rich
