I was troubleshooting my inoperative horn yesterday.

First off, my horn relay has many more wires than the four shown in all the diagrams.  What's with that? anybody with a '69 got a  picture of theirs they can post or email me eldredjamesatearthlinkdotnet?

Second, testing the horns themselves, is a 6 amp battery charger strong enough to sound the horn when attached to the green wire terminal of the horn and the ground just attached to the shell of the horn?

Third, the continuity test on the rag joint FAILED so I rigged up a jumper from one side to the other.  This is what led to the horn test.  Couldn't get the right angle on the nut to remove my horn relay.  Does that both come through somewhere?

The horn relay on the early cars is more than just a relay...it is a junction box for powering other systems of the car. If the car has options like A/C, alarm, rear window defogger, the relay will have more wires then the diagram shows, since most wiring diagrams will only show the base model wiring.

A 6 volt charger will probably NOT be enough to toot the horn. It might buzz it a little, but it won't give it a full honk. It needs 12v.

How about a 12volt/6amp model?

I'll check the Assembly book for those other wires since I have A/C.

Might get a buzz out of it, but it's best to check the horn with a 12v battery. Just depends I guess on how much amperage the charger is capable of putting out.
As far as other wires on the relay, some may have been added after the fact, for stereos, alarms, or what-not. Of course, the relay's main purpose is to toot the horn, but it is also used as a junction box, just to have a common spot to put the hot wires for other systems.

Pretty sure after running through Jim Shea's horn troubleshooting guide that I have a bum horn relay. 

The old relay was a bear to remove.  44 year old wires and screws hiding the 44 year old nut.

Now off to the shopping phase.  Our vendors first of course, but I only want an exact duplicate of the one I have (Delco Remy) made in USA.  Mainly so I can match up the wires with the notes and pictures I took.
