OK guys, here goes.

I'm putting together my horn button and a slew of little parts inside.  This is a 1969 tilt/telescoping column.  I had a mechanic swap out the old straight column for the adjustable one.  We didn't have the button parts at that time ( a couple months ago).

Now I have the parts.

I'm trying to install 3 spacers, 1 upper contact and of course the horn button assembly but when I do, there is no room for the button to depress and come back to its original position.

Thanks to corvette america for the diagram--i also got the parts from them.  The parts I'm trying to install are #30012, the shims just in front of it and its screws.  My spring doesn't look right as i have a new one that is different.
Any suggestions will be great!!I can't seem to get the contact 30012 to hold the spring end down.

The shims shouldn't be flat, if you notice, they are actually "wavy" when you place them on a flat surface. They should be stacked so that there is a gap between pieces in three areas which acts as a spring. (Practice with stacking them. If it looks "wrong," it's probably right!!) This is what provides the spring action to push the button back up. Let me know if you need some pics. Dad's '69 is taken apart right now, and I can help with pics. Darryl

Thanks everyone, this will give some paths to try this week.

Darryl, I did not know the shims were "wavy."  I pulled mine out and sure enough, they are a little wavy.  Now to find the best positioning of them.  They don't seem to be the same so that is a concern.  a Picture of your Dad's horn button guts might help.

Darryl, my car came with a removeable yellow Grant steering wheel with a smaller diameter.  It also came with what was described as the "original" steering wheel--that is what you see in the first picture.  I didn't like the Grant and it didn't fit when I switched to the T&T steering column.
