OK, so I thought I would be posting about finishing my engine rebuild.  But….while breaking in the cam the car just died, long story short I had/have a short in my ignition wiring…ugh.  Anyway, I jumped power from the choke to the coil and finished breaking in my cam – spent the next 5 hours tracing wires and trouble shooting before finding the ignition mess.

This is a 68 and I am uncertain as to how it “should be” wired.  The ignition switch has been rewired at some point in its past.  It has seven wires running from it about 8 inches and into two plugs (the ignition harness).  The wires of course are all red and hard to tell which is which – someone put a lot of thought into that one !    So my question, did the 68 harness plug directly into the ignition switch or was there a set of patch wires between the two?

I think I am going to cut this harness off and solder the wires together in order to make a good connection – then down the road consider replacing the wiring harness.  But there are several more pressing items on my to-do list.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your car? If not, you can look at/d-load one here. 53-82 Corvette Wiring Diagrams/Parts Manuals
Sounds like Bubba has been in your part of the country, too!
The ign harness is part of the engine harness, which would plug into the fusebox/firewall pass-thru, and from there, it would go to the ign switch. I'm not aware of any  jumpers, or short harness connectors on it.
Remember also, that the supply voltage from the ign switch to the coil will be on a resistor wire, usually covered in a cloth-like covering. The coil can't handle a full 12v all the time, so the resistor wire drops the voltage down to around 6-8 volts while running. There is also another wire that comes off of the starter relay that sends a full 12v to the coil only while starting.
