Greetings All,

As the title states, I'm attempting to relocate my alternator on my '79 to the big open space on the passenger side where the A/C would go. Car never had it, and I would really like to be able to gain easier access to my PS reservoir. I know we have the short water pump which rules out the alternator brackets for the same year Camaros and Firebirds; and I have priced the bracket through Alan Grove Brackets (which in all likelihood I'll end up buying). I'd really like to keep the engine compartment looking original if possible, hence the apprehension to buy a billet piece. I just figured with the GM small block being probably the most popular engine on the planet, that maybe someone knows some magical combination of OEM parts that will make this work. Any feedback from anyone who has undertaken this would be greatly appreciated.

Also I know Summit racing sells a "vintage" mount as well that may fit.

You may also want to look into the Chevelle and Cutlass of the same year, I believe one of them had the mount on the drivers side, the only other I can think of is the Malibu but I am not sure of the mount side.

Don't some of the older rams horn exhaust manifolds (like for 327's from the early-mid 60's) have an alternator bracket cast in?  Maybe that would work.   Some of those are 2 1/2" outlets, too, but they're harder to find, I think.

Thanks Bill, that link takes me to the Alan Grove parts that I've previously sourced.....although they are slightly more expensive.They will definitely do the job, with some minor tweaking. Those other GM models you referred to have the long water pump....that's gonna be the big dilemma here - even the short water pump isn't actually the same when it comes to our cars....apparently the shaft is 3/16" longer.

Hey Dave,

I like your thinking with the mid 60's 327 passenger manifold.....might be hard to track down. But it has got me thinking about the bracket for that manifold. If memory serves me, you can get after market alternator brackets for mounting off of headers. They usually attach at the front two header bolts, and then your adjustable pivoting alternator bracket mounts off that. This might give me the adjust ability I need to line up with the drive pulley. I'll definitely look into it.

IIRC some header mfg. offer an alt brkt for those cars that had it on the exhaust manifold.  Might check there.

A 64 w/o air has the alternator mounted on the right.  Manifolds come in 2" and 2 1/2".  Bracket bolts to the manifold.  Brackets are readily available, manifolds are a bit harder to find but are available.  Rik's Corvettes has them.  This option is probably a bit more expensive than the $90 Allen Grove bracket but it sure does not look better.  Longer wires can be snaked into the top of the radiator support.   64 also has a short water pump.
