..minding my own business like I usually do.....driving down the road last night after  I finished bleeding the brakes and replacing the leaky caliper on the Green machine, when the headlights and tail lights went out.

Funny thing I never realized how dark the road I was on is at night until that moment. Turned on the 4-ways and limped the mile back home driving by the light of my blinkers.

The lights popped back on just as I got to my property line.

So what do you think? Loose Ground? Where is the ground that handles that circuit?

It never stops...

That stinks..at least you were close enough to home you didn't need the rollback..I would suspect the headlight switch..I am not sure but I think they have their own fuse or power source..not sure on the ground side..but the switch is the only thing that I can think of off hand that would turn them both off at the same time..maybe even a bad connection on the switch ..they have ETM's here on the site..I think Ebo? Not sure but I would look into the switch side..

The headlight/taillight circuit is protected by a circuit breaker, which is built into the headlight switch itself. When it gets hot, for whatever reason, it will trip, and you'll have no lights. When it cools, it will again work. Sounds like the headlight switch is the problem, but....there could always be a short in the head/taillight circuits that could trip the breaker. I have had a ton of problems with GM headlight switches and this same problem, so my first thought is the actual switch.
It could also be a fuse-link starting to take a doo-doo, but they usually don't re-connect on their own like that. Might be worth checking all of them, just the same.

May sound to simple but I had the same problem once after long storage, I checked for loose or poor connections at the headlight switch and that was my problem. Then about a year ago I was driving home and same thing no lights, I was close enough to my wifes place of work so pulled in there and was going to leave it till morning. Just for the heck of it I climbed in under dash to look at fuses and on the fuse panel, I had knocked a resistor of some sort out of its clips. Lights came back on and have been fine since. Did you bump anything while working on the brake issues?

Jim, Check the circuit breaker. They oxidize from the inside out. I also have a circuit breaker on my power windows and they cut out on me on the way to a show. I Pulled the breaker and cracked it open and it was literally filled with rusty dust. There was just enough of the breaker left to get the windows up and down a last time before it totally pooped out. Put in a new breaker and now the windows roll up and down nearly twice as fast!! LFTSSF!!
