Gary: I cut out the bottom of my original big old GM closed element housing and used it as the drop base for a 12" air filter element.  What I ended up with was just a 12" diameter plate that sits on the carb air horn and drops the element down an inch or two.  On top of the element I used a stock-style air cleaner lid from a '73-'75.  ('76 and later used a closed element system - my original lid was too big).

One of the reasons this issue comes up so often is the vast majority of aftermarket air cleaner systems use 14" diameter elements.  There are some 10" aftermarket products out there, but very few 12" systems -- most of our cars came with 12" element systems.  As Joel points out, it is not only the overall height of the air cleaner you have to be concerned with, but where the front of the air cleaner will be in relation to the slope of the hood.  My first plan almost worked, but there was hood interference only where the hood contacted the front of the air cleaner.  (I used my daughter's play doh to check)   I solved the problem by going back to the smaller 12" open element and using the lid from the older cars.  And that also solved an aesthetic dilemma I was having since I really  just wanted a simple black top.   (I don't go for a lot of chrome in my engine bay)

Hope that explains it further....

Joel and I posted at almost the same time. Smile  Joel, you're absolutely right, except I think you might have assumed I have an early 76 that came originally with the cowl induction.  It actually came with the closed element system, but it doesn't really change the story at all.  I think the air cleaner elements were the same dimensionally between the two designs.....

I received the air cleaner base the other day and installed it. Works perfectly and clears the electric choke and throttle linkages just fine on the Edelbrock 1806 carb. It clears the hood on my '75 even better then the base I had before.

Ermm  O.K. Gents. You have conquered a dilema in that area, NOW, does the same possibility exist on a '72 with an even lower hood line. I would like to remove a Q-jet that no one seems to be able to keep working correctly, and put on a E-brock with the needed plate under it. I know my options are next to nill, but am getting discourged.

If you install an Edelbrock 2101 Performer intake you won't need the adapter plate which would keep things a bit lower. It should fit fine under the '72 hood. The reason I needed the drop base is I'm running a 7116 Performer RPM Vortec intake which is higher than stock.

Send your Q-jet to Lars (the Corvette Forum guy).  He is a master with the Q-jet.  Just post a thread asking about it in the C3 section.

I had a similar problem with my '72 after I had my engine rebuilt and swapped out the original worn Q Jet for a new Holley & HEI ignition. The stock [my preference] twin snorkel air cleaner would not fit so I had to go aftermarket but to fit under the hood plus clear the HEI distributor I had to get a recessed air cleaner base and adjust it's location until it cleared the Holley throttle & choke fittings. I still had clearance issues with the wing nut so I ground it down until it longer touches the underside of the hood, it has a 3 inch filter. It's not exactly the result I wanted but it does look Ok..
