Ok here is a easy question for someone with one of those little books that I didn't get at Carlisle this year..the number on the right front of the engine with the VIN..V1203HW..The HW I know what that is but what about the V1203??  I know I have a 70 block due to the casting on the drivers rear of 3970010..if that helps..just curious and really bored..

V = Flint Engine assy plant
12 = month(Dec)
03 = 3rd day of the month
This means that engine was assembled on December 3rd, in the Flint assembly plant. If it had a T instead of the V, it would have been assembled in the Tonawanda engine assembly plant.

The 3970010 is simply the casting number, but it doesn't really tell what year. That block was also used in (late)'69 on the 300 & 350 hp engines, as well as many other engines for years after that . To determine the year of the block, you need to look at the casting date, at the top right rear of the block, in the same area as the casting number, but on the right side of center. First letter indicates the month, the second number(s) indicate the day, and the last number(or two, depending on year, and which foundry cast the block) indicates the year.

Allrighty I found K79. After a can of carb cleaner..I will try and see if I found the right one.. so is the K November the 7 day and the 9 1969 year??  I did find that the 3970010 was first used in the late 69 up 72 or further..was this a better updated super block or just a number change??  This engine didn't sit around long since I have a early December car..I think the 6th.   I like this edit post thing..can't do that on the phone..
Thanks dude

3970010 was a generic casting # for 350 engines for several years...I've seen them in the 2 and 4 bolt variety as well with that casting #... lukesvette2010-11-28 13:19:47

Nov 7th is the casting date. However, it could be a '69 OR '79 block. That block was used in various forms from '69 to '81, so...
Now, we need to see the actual VIN stamp to narrow down the year. Or, if you already know what the "HW" suffix is for, that should end the mystery..
HW is a 350hp 350 for a 4speed '69 Corvette.

Yeah I new that the HW code was for that..I was just curious what all the other stuff was for..the VIN is stamped up there next to the V12003HW..it's nice to have this stuff put together so I know that things are what I thought they were..I would like to go thru some sort of NCRS test to see how it would fare..I have a few NCRS judges who claim to be a 400?? Which I have no idea what that is but so far they say the paint and vintage air and wrong tires hurt the score now..they actually like my crappy exhaust as they say it's a close reproduction of the original..I hate it..to quiet..I guess there is nothing I can't make stock except the crap paint..to bad they painted it years ago..it will be a Rodney job to get it right..if they will allow single stage paint anymore that's what it will get..I will take pics of all the numbers I can find and decode and put them in the file with the tank sticker..
Thanks
Rich

A level 400/Master is the Top ranks of NCRS Judges. Depending on what years they are most familiar with, you might wanna pay attention to what they say.
