Hello! Please help, need info. I installed a 350CI GM crate motor into my 1975 Vette for more zip. The thing has vortech heads which limited which intake manifold to use. I did use a Edelbrock #2116 manifold and it seems a bit high. The company told me it's the lowest one they make for my engine because of the heads. I have been told to use a Holley Avenger #670 carb with a drop-down air cleaner and that set up would give me room to the under side of the hood. Really don't want to get into high rise hood's, etc. Also, who makes drop-down type air cleaners that may work? Can anyone out there offer some advise? MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!  Darrell

Darrell, I had a K&N filter kit with a drop base. I also went from a 3" to a 2" filter which added even more clearance.

This should work with a 14" filter and lid:

Hey Darrel. .have you put the hood on yet or are you way beyond that now...I would make sure that the carb will bolt right to the intake without an adapter plate..they can add a half inch..not sure if a #670 holley will bolt to that intake without one...

Darell,

Check out MassFlow Injections site.  Chris there uses a very low profile intake that he modifies for the injectors.  I believe its a Edlebrock, but he can advise.

Regarding a low air cleaner, check out K&N 14" round with a 4" drop.  I used this on my 82 and it worked great.  Part numbers 601263 for a 3  601264 for a 4"

A large choice of dropped air cleaners is online at Summit Racing:

Scroll through and check the specs on several.  Many give the net height above carb flange.  I am still trying to figure which one will allow me to use the best intake manifold and keep the stock hood.

Does anyone know how much the dropped air cleaners may reduce total air flow because of the shorter filter that is also partly below the carb flange?  Perhaps they don't reduce it at all since the filter is open all the way around, unlike the OEM.

I don't want to defeat the purpose of a high-rise manifoild by restricting flow through the air cleaner.  Thanks.  Happy holidays!

Well Per4mance, as a retired US Army paratrooper with two tours in Viet Nam and one in Desert Storm I believe I have proven I am not a coward.  Your advice was not funny and not helpful.  If you don't know anything helpful to reply to a post please be courteous enough to refrain.

It is not a question of budget, I can buy anything I want, I just want to keep the stock hood.  Anyone else have any friendly and helpful advice?

Hey BC..I have looked at a few of those drop down air filter kits and you ask if they reduce flow..as long as the filter is the same height and diameter as the stock one it will actually flow more..due to the curve design of the drop down.. flow will be boosted even though a small amount..I would look for a K&N filter..I like the old school oiled air filters like that..they cost more but you can reuse them..I didn't see what intake you want to put on your car but sometimes the manufacturer that you bought one or will buy from knows what will fit under there..they have been there done that..also have you changed anything else with the engine..that makes a difference in what intake you get also..I think the first one that comes up is nice..all black wrinkle design..the Pro 141-752 drop is a inch and a half..I searched most of them that I could find and it had the most actual drop..not sure if it fits the Q jet you have but it says it does..not sure also if it has interference with the throttle or EGR valve being it goes down so far..should be albe to fit alot of different intakes with that much drop..does your car have that cowel induction??..that makes things up a  good bit also..
Rich

Ps..
Thanks for your service...
I hope I can help in the future..

Well Darrell, since you don't have a sense of humor about this, I'll tell you how to check your clearances.Put on your set up you have now and see if your hood closes with  whatever air cleaner setup you got and roll up some playdough around the air cleaner and close the hood, lift it up and that should give you the distance of room you have to work with .

NOW yer talkin!!

The '73-'77 cars had the highest hoods of any of the models, other than the L88 hoods....if there's a clearance issue with your carb/air cleaner, that thing must be stickin out quite a bit! You haven't said for sure that the hood IS hitting anything, so we're not sure where to go with the info....

I am running a GMPP 350HO vortec heads a RPM manifold with a Berry Grant 650 dbl pumper carb. I had to go with a drop base air filter housing and I think the K&N is 3" tall. Just barely clears the hood.
I also add I have a 1/2" carb spacer so the accelerator pump clears the manifold. I am using a button head screw to hold the ari cleaner on. Here is a picture of the setup
The filter in the one picture came with the assembly with I changed out for the K&N. I also did not use the bow-tie wing nut to hold the filter down. I was like you, didn't want to have to change the hood out.

Glen,
Thanks for the info and pics.  You have a great looking setup and a beautiful C3.  I was told on the phone by a tech at Edelbrock that the RPM would not fit even without an air cleaner.  I didn't believe it so was asking here.  I want to use the RPM with a Holley 670 and AFR 195cc heads.  I know how to measure and check for clearance but was interested in what others have used under the stock hood.  Thanks again, Happy Holidays!

BC, one additional point from when I was researching my set up - I believe that the Performer RPM and the newer Airgap have the same deck to carb flange height. Something else to consider.

Before I went to an L88 hood, I had an RPM with an Edebrock carb, drop base w/ 2" filter and a K&N airraid lid under my stock 79 hood with a 1/2" to spare!

From a fellow veteran, welcome home.

Paul
