Hi All,

My 81 started running rough and missing. The choke light stays on and the engine temp seems to be a bit cold, maybe 180 or so.

Think it is a carburetor problem?

  Thanks,
    Tex

I wish I new more, and I sure someone will add info but it seems you have a engine temp sensor keeping the choke light on. The thermostat should make the engine go to at least 190 maybe it could be stuck open?

keep hope someone more familiar with the 81 setup might have some checks you can make, you might take a look at the wires at your sensors and the acual choke on the carb just to make sure nothing has come loose. Not sure but I think i read the choke light comes on if the electric choke coil is open. I have a 77 not much on them most all of my stock stuff is gone just eldbrock and manifold simple electrick choke. hopefully more help to follow

The choke light can come on for several reasons...not just because of a choke issue, tho it is definitely worth looking at first. The wire for the choke should have 12v on it with the key on...check that first. If no voltage, check fuses. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the same fuse is used for the radio, but it might not be...check all of them anyway.
Could be the choke is not opening all the way, which would cause the rough running issues....

Also, the choke light could come on if there is an issue with the alternator...believe it or not....
