I know I don't have a corvette engine. However in my 68 I have an Engine plate number (front of engine on pad) V0605HC,  I am trying to figure this all out. It looks to be a Flint car June 5th and the HC suffix looks to be a 65 327 powerglide full size car or 69 350 from a Chevelle Camaro or Nova. The engine block casting number is 3892657 which I think means it is a 62 - 67 327 or a 1967 car engine. Back of engine is a F17 which could be June 1st 1967.
The heads may be different 3890462 which seem to be from a 67 chevy 302-327.
Several years ago a mechanic told me it was a 350 with 4 bolt main.
So is there any surefire way of knowing exactly what this engine is????. Is there any other numbers I need.   HELP??????

HC suffix was used in '65 on the 275hp 327 4 barrel, auto trans, full sized cars. It was also used in '69 on the 250hp 350 2 barrel, standard trans, Nova,Chevelle & Camaro.
The casting #3892657 was used in several different years, in many different car lines, but as far as I can tell, it was ONLY produced as a 2 bolt main engine.
The heads won't really help, since they may have been changed somewhere down the line.
More research is needed....

So I am sitting with a 65  maybe a 69  or maybe a 67 because of the F17 at the back of the engine. Anyway to narrow these results????.

The discrepancy between the suffix number and the casting date needs more research. A '67 cast date with a 65/69 suffix doesn't make any sense at all. I would need to get my book out....the suffix just doesn't match the cast date OR the block cast number at this point.
Are you absolutely certain that the suffix is an HC?

I even had a magnifying glass and the C looked like it could be an O but closer inspection it was a C because it did not completely close up like the O. NO  it does not make sense to me either. I have looked at several sites on line trying to figure this out, but I have not been able to.

From the information you gave it's definitely a Chevy small block!

Actually, that engine casting was used for a number of applications, including 1967 Z-28 302 290hp engine, as were the cylinder heads.  The block casting was also used for 327's in '65-'68 Impala's and '67 Camaro's.

THe "HC" suffix identifies it as a 250 or 275 horsepower 327 originally being originally installed in a '65-68 full size sedan with a Powerglide transmission, or a '67 Camaro with Powerglide.  At least one source says that casting was also used as a 1967 and 1969 350 with manual transmission.

The casting date does appear to be June 1, 1967.

The cylinder heads were for a 1967 302 or 327 engine.

Based on the information available (and I'm certainly no expert), it sounds like your car has a '67 327 originally mated to a Powerglide transmission.  It may have the original cylinder heads attached.

It would be a real find if it was an original Z-28 302 as they were real screamers, but it's doubtful.  If it was a 302 I think you'd know by the performance it was no standard small block.  They were so underrated at 290hp I don't see how any Chevy rep could even say that with a straight face.  A friend had a '69 Z-28 with the 302 and that car could smoke the tires in any gear.

I had always thought this was a 350. I guess because what the mechanic said several years ago. Could it be a 1967 350 manual trans as one source said. Or perhaps a 327 1967 Camaro, All I really know for sure is that the original engine was a 427 435 hp with the three duces. The first owner who I spoke with many years ago had purchased the car in Houston Tx. and this was what he ordered. The second owner said he took the engine out and sold it to a guy, because gas was so high and to put in his ( I believe Camaro) and it went to Missouri and was later wrecked.  I am not sure what he replaced it with, but said it had the double hump racing heads. Which it has the double hump heads now.  The car was sold again and the person who had it in 1989 blew the engine and had a mechanic shop replace the engine. I think it was a short block. I talked to the mechanics that did the work back then and they had told me that the owner was pissed off abougt having to get a new engine and didn't want to pay what all they had done. Supposedly the mechanics painted the engine yellow just to piss off the  guy  further. I bought the basket case right after that and since repainted the engine orange. and of course a 10,000 paint job and many, many  other cost throughout the years. The 68 roadster is pristine conditon now. Just have been thinking about replacing this engine, but wanted to know what it is. Maybe this is to much info, but wanted all to know my reason for my madness.   Thanks so much for your time checking this out for me.
