What is the reason the car is harder to start when hot? When I first get in the car is turns over very fast and starts right up. When it has been ran and I cut it off and then try to start it it wants to grunt  a few times then turn over and start.

Starter could be getting hot from engine heat and when you try to restart - it doesn't have the "guts" it had when it was cold .

I'm sure others will have other suggestions - gas, spark

Sounds like you may have a timing issue...as in too much initial timing. That's what normally makes them "grunt" when starting hot. It could also be carbon build-up on the pistons, so-so fuel, or too much piston/cylinder wall clearance.
I'd suggest checking the timing first. The advance weights in the distributor may be sticking, too...check the timing cold and hot, to see if there is a major difference.

You may...
Even more reason to check the ignition timing. Do you happen to have the specs on the cam?
