I have a 1976 vette. When I take it on long drives it sputters like its going to die. Also hard to start after long drives. It only happens on long drives. Could it be fuel pump?

Hmmm.....a fuel pump either works or it doesn't. I think I would look more for a vapor lock condition caused by heat build-up.

Could also be crap in the fuel tank, stopping up the sock as you drive. Once the car sits for a while, some of the crap will fall off the sock, and then you can start the whole process all over again on the next drive.
Another thing that could cause this is a fuel tank that is not venting properly. Try your next long drive with the filler cap loose, and see if that helps anything.

insulate the fuel line from the pump up to the carb, put a thicker insulating gasket between the carb and intake manifold.in the old days we would put insulation and wooden clothes pins on the fuel line, the clothes pins worked as a heat sink, wasn't purty but it workedThumbs Up.something like an asbestos wrap would work, but not asbestos, one of the other guys in here, prolly has another idea.you just gotta keep the high heat off the fuel line,an that engine compartment gets pretty hotConfused

Be sure and check your "S" hose from the frame rail's line to the fuel pump. Was my problem on my '81......after some expenses that weren't needed. Live and learn but do check that S hose.

All of the above are good things to check.  The only additional idea I have is the possibility of the ignition module failing as it heat soaks.  It seems less likely than the fuel ideas above, but worth a check if those don't work.
