Jack,

I guess the answer is yes.

Since I was able to put the engine and trans in together, I can't see why they can't come out together.  The hard part is that you have to pull a tire and do it from the side.

To avoid any damage, It would probably be easier to get the engine out without the trans.  I know the bolts are a pain to get to but it is the easier way to go.  Once the hoist starts to lift the engine, a good shake should seperate them.

Good luck,
Anthony

this would be much much easier with a removable trans crossmember.
and should be a little easier with small block instead of big block...  but does seem un-necessary...

its pretty easy to seperate the two and pull seperately.

I just pulled my transmission and hen engine last weekend out of my 68.  No issues and less hassles pulling them separate.  Once I had the shifter removed, drive train unbolted (front only), and speedo cable removed its only four bolts and its in your hands.  I was able to pull my smallblock with the radiator in place – if you are hell bent on removing engine and tranny you will need to pull the radiator.

Admittedly tho, I do plan on attaching the trans to the engine and replacing together – I think this will be substantially easier than fighting with it under the car.

You should have a leveler for your hoist, a friend (goes without saying I hope) and you will probably need to jack up the front to get the right angle and then lower it once cleared.

I pulled mine separate!  It was not that bad, and installed separate!  Installing separate was a bit of a PIA, but pulling my radiator and dual spall fans was a PIA getting the fans back in.

Good luck, it will be worth it in the end!

I pulled my together and put back together. With the cross member under the tranny, it's a pain trying to do it separate.

Yes, it can be done and it is much easier than trying to get the transmission in from underneath the car.  As indicated above, a way to level the engine is important.

Hey – I been waiting for the update on this thread…how did the tranny go?  Is it back in?

I finished my rebuild and get the engine back in my 68 and transmission afterwards.  I had to remove the linkage in order to slide the transmission back far enough – but that was really just another 20 minutes or so.  Once I had the transmission in place the spline dropped in without an issue, but the final half an inch was a royal pain.  I put in the bolts just hand tight with a bottle jack under the tail for the correct pitch.  I installed the clutch and popped it in (had the wife hold it in for me actually) and the transmission went the rest of the way without issue.  This was my first time doing it, took me about an hour all told.  I am glad I didn’t attempt engine and trans at once.  Now I need to figure out my side mount headers….nightmare !

Anyway, jp75vette….how about that update?
