I'm dead in the driveway fellas. I washed the car parked back in garage and dried it hooked up the trailer and backed it into position and started the car and got it lined up, the car was running fine and as I was just making final ramp adjustments it just shut off. It stumbled and died, it will turn over but not fire. I can see gas comming out of venturies when I move acel rod. WTF is this a omen not to make the trip to NJ?
I had just changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, pcv valve. I took it for a spin just after that and it ran great.
Confused now what?

Took the cap off rotor looks fine pulled the coil and the rubber disc looks fine still has the grease on it the spring and plunger looks good I did a little polishing on coil to spring pick up and put it all back together....visions of adams dist. mess were dancin in my headShocked Still will not fire can smell fuel. I took off a plug wire stuck a long screw driver in end of boot and do not see any spark jumping......bad coil? Did changing all the other components mess it up. I did go with an Accel copper cap instead of alumin......

So you took the new coil out and put the old coil back in and it died again..did you plug everything in tight..still no spark..put the new coil back in..check your connections and retry..you should have power to the coil on the big red wire on the cap..the other is the tachometer..I hate to say it you may have gotten a bad part..not un heard of..
Good luck
Rich

I gave up for tonight and towed it back into garage, then had to put the trailer back together and park that. I'll try putting the new coil back in tomorrow, would anything else have shorted out that module again? When it shuts down like that it smell's real strong like diesel fuel....
Fun times.............LOL Remember it's all only a test.....I'm off to the BBQ with or without the vette!

Oh man..if you got the part from Auto Zone or something like it..the parts are not the best r high quality ..shorted wires? I don't really think so..between cake and ice cream check for the power then replace that stupid pick up again and hopefully be done.
Sorry for the bad luck..

Sounds like a bad ignition module. Did you put the grease on the bottom of the new module? Without the grease, the module will not be able to transfer the heat to the distributor housing, and the module will overheat pretty quick. I have seen them burn out pretty quick because of that.
I will tell ya this....if you have the wrong coil, it can fry the module, but usually not that quick. MAKE SURE the wire colors on the coil match your original...white, yellow, red...could be any of those colors, but it must match(I think they all have a black wire). The coils have different operating characteristics, and resistances, thus the identifying colors of the wires. Also, MAKE SURE you have a good ground to the coil. There should be a goofy looking dog-leg type, metal piece(ground) that fits UNDER the coil, and goes to the connector on the cap. The black wire on the coil will go to on of the screws that holds it to the cap, and it should go to the same corner/screw that the metal ground piece is on. Without that ground, it'll burn the coil up pretty quick.
It's possible the pole piece/pickup is bad. That is the circular part that goes under the rotor, that the little spikey things on the distributor shaft turn inside of. Look at the wires from the pole piece carefully...they will usually be mooshy, and the insulation will fall off if you move them. In the process of changing the ignition module, you may have moved the pole piece wires enough to cause a problem. They plug into one end of the module.
Hope my descriptions are unnerstandable.

You should have left it alone with the new parts!  See what you get for being cheap? A Vette doesn't like new parts being taken off once you give it a present! Hope you get it worked out. See you either way Saturday!

Here was the process

  1. Car shuts off 6 inchs from ramps
  2. I can see fuel in carb
  3. removed cap to look at new rotor condtion
  4. removed coil from new copper cap to check rubber and spring
  5. tried again same condition
  6. took off plug wire insert screw driver see no spark
  7. put in new coil same thing
  8. put in module from red car (did not put grease on used as it came out of car)
  9. car starts sounds good
  10. shut off
  11. decide to put original coil back in and return new coil
  12. change out coils
  13. put everything back together
  14. start car runs and sounds good
  15. get ready to drop hood
  16. shuts off again
  17. bow down to the gods
  18. tow back into garage
  19. sleep all new with tight stomach
  20. Do the old why, that car did not want to go for a trailer ride

Limited time today before we leave, but what should I do first????? Put new coil in again? get another module and hope it does not fry?

HEY BUD, FIRST of all this is SEPTEMBER not MAY.  SECOND, winch that plastic car on the trailor and haul it to Pauls. We will eat like kings at the BBQ, then get the letricks done on your car and go to the show. Don't skimp on parts, they have been in there a good many moons. Put the good stuff in and be done with it.  I am on your way down, yell if you run into a snag. We will depart bout 0730. See ya on the lawn at Pauls.    M-n-S

At this point, I would suggest replacing the module and the coil, same as Paul. I would definitely take a long hard look at the pole piece wires.
There's a small possibility that there is something wrong with the ignition switch, that is killing the voltage to the dist. Check for solid 12v on the red(prolly pink by now) wire labeled "Batt" on the dist cap. Test light won't do it..use a meter.
If installing a new module, wipe/scrape off the old grease from the dist housing, so it will be nice and clean. Schmear the grease that comes with the new module on the back side of it, making sure to get it spread evenly all over. Then bolt it down.
When you replaced the cap, did you install the center contact/pin correctly? The contact/pin goes in first, then the rubber washer...
Hope ya get it going...
